My PhD work finally came out at eLife! In this story, I quantified the number of active hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells using the variance of labeling in them. This method is based on the inverse correlation of a label following binomial distribution and precursor numbers, and previous work done by Dr. Miguel Ganuza and Dr. Shannon MicKinney-Freeman. Such relationship is not restricted to hematopoietic system. It can be apllied to any stem cell area where immunophenotye-defined population may not necessarily correlate with stem cell activity/function. Check it out here! https://lnkd.in/epVsDiXx

A groundbreaking research in cell fate plasticity and regenerative medicine! 🧬 A recent study in Drosophila's intestinal stem cell lineage uncovers the remarkable potential for cell reprogramming within tissues. Key transcription factors like Ttk and Pros are identified as crucial players in driving the transdifferentiation of enterocytes into enteroendocrine cells and the dedifferentiation of EEs into progenitor cells. 🦟 The study also sheds light on the shared chromatin accessibility profile among different intestinal cell types, suggesting a stable chromatin landscape despite transcriptome changes. 🧫 Moreover, the research explores age as a potential factor influencing the efficiency of cell fate transitions. 🕰️ #CellFatePlasticity #RegenerativeMedicine #StemCells 🌟🔬

Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss, which can’t be reversed due to the loss of cells responsible for vision. Most efforts with stem cell transplants have not been successful because the cells never arrive at their designated destination. Now, a research team led by Petr Baranov, MD, PhD, assistant scientist at the Schepens Eye Institute of Mass Eye and Ear, has found a promising method for repopulating these cells by changing the microenvironment in the eye, enabling stem cells to migrate and survive in the retina in preclinical models. Learn about the study, which was recently published in PNAS: http://spklr.io/6041mLLU.

Radiation therapy has the potential to disrupt the equilibrium of gut bacteria, leading to inflammation and irritation. In a publication in Cell Press Stem Cell, researchers Putianqi Wang, Fred de Sauvage and team delved into the influence of gut nerves on the recovery of intestines after radiation-induced damage. The investigation revealed the crucial role of adrenergic nerves in facilitating the production of the IL-22 protein, thereby expediting the healing of the intestines. This discovery holds promise for guiding post-radiation exposure treatments. Learn more about their research here: https://bit.ly/47SD6lu

🆕 We are more than happy to welcome to our Institute Dr. Vincenzo Calvanese, a well-recognized and consolidated researcher on #StemCell biology. Dr. Calvanese will lead the new “Blood Stem Cell Identity” group. They will try to understand which molecular features and regulatory processes identify a #BloodStemCell, a fundamental knowledge to advance in many areas, like haematopoietic stem cell transplant, one of the few successful clinical applications of stem cells today. Calvanese and his team join forces with IJC in the fight against #leukaemia 💪 Know more about his research in this article ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eWS9BR2n

What kind of exercise increases #stemcells in the body? I've mentioned it several times, but running a marathon was the first physical activity to be studied & proven to release more stem cells. But...are there other exercise methods to boost your repair system? Maybe some with less running? 😄 Let's talk about it in this video. PS - stem cell research is constantly changing! You can find out more about what we're doing at Stemregen here: https://www.stemregen.co/
