As we mark #16days of activism, UNDP Iraq would like to shine a light on ending violence against women who have experienced conflict. Several women and children were displaced during the conflict in #Iraq and now struggle with settling back home in their areas of origin. Our work in building social cohesion is helping these women overcome trauma, acquire new skills, and build new relationships in their communities. Read more about it in this blog post 👉 https://bit.ly/3t8G3P2 #16daysofactivism

My new article with Katie V., Annie Bunting, and Susan A. Bartels is now available online & #OpenAccess with the Journal of Peace Research! “'Those MONUSCO agents left while we were still pregnant’: Accountability and support for peacekeeper-fathered children in the DRC” explores the high and unmet needs of women raising peacekeeper-fathered children in the DRC. We uncovered serious barriers and reluctance to report, allegations that were incompletely investigated, and worsened poverty resulting from a lack of support for children. Large gaps persist between UN policy on #SEA and women's experiences. Given MONUSCO's drawdown, increased operations of regional armed forces, & worsened conflict in eastern DRC, now is a crucial time to enhance protections and provide comprehensive support and justice following SEA. These needs are equally true for peacekeeper-fathered children, who face high levels of stigma & are too-often left unsupported by their fathers & the UN mission. Here we argue that, beyond a humanitarian imperative, these children have a right to support under the #UNCRC. Thanks so much for reading! https://lnkd.in/gyuuYvSB

“There are many rich people in the area who have jobs and even their own small businesses. They are receiving aid because they are connected to corrupt local leaders.” (Women’s group representative, Balkh) ✅ In Afghanistan, the current method of selecting aid recipients through community leaders is perceived as opaque and unfair. ✅ A lack of transparency in the selection process remains. The absence of clear selection criteria reportedly deepens community divisions and exacerbates tensions. ✅ There's a strong belief that involving women in the selection process could significantly enhance the identification of the most vulnerable, promoting a more equitable distribution of aid. 📢 Communities are calling for a more inclusive approach. They advocate for broader participation of community members in the selection process. Women, however, still express a desire for aid organisations to continue consulting male community leaders, ensuring a respectful and safe engagement process that addresses protection concerns and encourages open dialogue. These are some of the key findings we identified in our latest collaboration with Ground Truth Solutions, "Engaging Women in the Humanitarian Response in Afghanistan," funded by #UNWomen, which sheds light on the critical challenges and opportunities within aid distribution practices. It's #FeministFriday so I'm sharing a photo of beautiful, strong, resilient women from Darfur, as I mourn the loss of lives there in the past few days. Loss of lives due to men-made war, violence, senseless killings. The horrors taking place in #Darfur have occupied my mind, sharing space with the other depraved situation of #Gaza. Between 700 to 1000 people are believed to have been killed in Darfur in the latest round of fighting. But when the dust settles, I fear we will find more bodies. Videos and images of torture, executions, violence, are hard to watch, as are stories of sexual violence hard to stomach, and images of women and children fleeing, running for their lives - some lucky to have escaped across the border, others trapped, their fate uncertain. Over 10,000 people have been killed since war broke out in April. The coup military government (SAF) have lost control to RSF opposition forces. #Khartoum is gone. Darfur is almost gone. We are watching the violence in Al Fashir holding our breaths. #Sudan as we know it, as I know it, gone. For months women's civil society have called for #ceasefire and for political discussions to include them, but I'm not sure if any women or civil society were anywhere near any conversations related to "Jeddah talks". This is most unfortunate for it is Sudanese women and youth who are leading peace, leading change. The future of Sudan. More must be done to protect civilians, and to end the violence. Member states and those with influence must stop this massacre. I wish for #peace, for a time when women can sit and talk and laugh.
