Collaboration Creates Currency: Meet Kelly Till, President - Richmond Times-Dispatch (Lee Enterprises) Yesterday, I had the pleasure of having lunch with Kelly Till, the first woman to lead the Richmond Times-Dispatch in its 172 year history. During our conversation, we discovered many common links we possessed and identified ways we could collaborate in the future. #CollaborationCreatesCurrency isn’t just a book title, it is a movement that fosters personal growth and professional relationships that are mutually beneficial. As part of my philanthropic efforts, I decided to expand my giving to nonprofit organizations & HBCUs. For every copy of #CollaborationCreatesCurrency that is purchased directly from my website; $10 will be donated to one of 6 organizations that the buyer chooses. Books can be purchased individually or as a bundle through the #CollaborationCreatesCurrency Sponsorship Program. Below are the list of nonprofits selected for this endeavor: • Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia • The School Days Foundation, Inc. • The Confess Project of America • Rotary International Foundation • Mount Saint Michael Academy • Grove Christian School Click the link in the comment section to learn more and to order your copy of #CollaborationCreatesCurrency

Do #pittsburgh funders have Main Character Syndrome? The Cleveland Clinic defines Main Character Syndrome as "a series of behaviors in which you see yourself as the main character in the story of your life. You are the protagonist and everyone else is often a sidekick or a villain. You often see yourself as the most important person in the room, and you act according to the narrative of your plot — however you define it." I'm thinking of using Vu Le's Main Character Role Actualization in Philanthropy (or MCRAP) survey to do an assessment of the philanthropic landscape in Pittsburgh based only on information that's publicly available. #nonprofits #grantmaking #equity

The week before last, MacKenzie Scott announced that she was giving $640 million to small nonprofits that responded to an open call for applications. · Over 6,000 nonprofits applied. · 361 nonprofits were selected. · 279 were each granted $2M, and 82 were each granted $1M. Two things impress me here: (1) The size and scale of this giving is incredible. (2) These grants were entirely unrestricted— to be used however the nonprofit sees fit. My sense is that MacKenzie Scott focuses less on thematic giving and more on identifying those nonprofits that are operating at a high level. I also sense a humility in her approach to giving or rather an understanding that if you pick the right nonprofit, you have to trust that the nonprofit is the subject matter expert in the mission that it is pursuing. I think of this as TRUST Philanthropy. I’ve read a lot of people both praising and criticizing MacKenzie Scott for her philanthropy. With the size of this grant cycle, we will have a case study on whether TRUST Philanthropy is successful. For those nonprofit representatives in my network whose organization has received a grant, I congratulate you, not just for the grant, but for the organizational success you have achieved to warrant the grant in the first place. https://lnkd.in/ezx6ehPF For those of you serving on Boards, ask your Board an ice-breaker question at your next meeting: what would your organization do with a grant that size? Then ask yourself: is our organization performing at the level of these 361 grant recipients? https://lnkd.in/eRtF7aA2

MacKenzie Scott's Yield Giving has announced the selection of 361 non-profits for round 2 evaluation, potentially receiving a $640 million award. https://lnkd.in/d2hgdZFt Her strategic philanthropic initiative is poised to create a profound impact on communities worldwide, serving as a beacon for others to join in similar endeavors. However, it's worth noting that only approximately 10% of equitable healthcare non-profits made the cut. The rigorous evaluation process, which includes both Quiet Research and an Open Call, underscores the commitment to ensuring that these funds are allocated where they can make the most difference. Yet, it begs the question: why aren't there more non-profits making it to the second round? Perhaps there's a need for greater awareness on the impact of equitable health, or even a greater emphasis on directly impacting communities in need. #nonprofit #opencallupdate #leverforchange #healthequity

You know your prospect gives to higher education and art museums but you can’t find any evidence of it. How is that possible? When meeting a new prospect, it’s quite exhilarating to find out that they are philanthropic and have given generously to other organizations. Perhaps the prospect will be interested in focusing some of that #philanthropy towards your organization. But occasionally, #fundraisingprofessionals may find a gap between what the prospect says and what is publicly available. 👇 check out the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/ee_VAAD7 #DAF, #donoradvisedfund, #donorresearch, #findinggiving, #foundations, #givingsearch, #majorgift, #majorgiftprospect, #prospectresearch

Could someone explain this to me? While I can applaud Ms. Scott (a fellow Virginian) for her work- it is unfortunate that her requirements to apply have been organizations already having/bringing in $1 mil or more. I've attempted to apply for funds for 10 separate anti-trafficking organizations in the past 3 years. I can't even submit an application due to prior financial requirements. As a grant writer for anti-trafficking non-profits, this is extremely exclusionary. Thank you for your efforts, but all of the little guys get left behind, as per usual, when "big philanthropy" happens. (and by "little guys" I mean "the folks with boots on the ground doing the work day in and day out.") The ones going personally broke to do the work. The ones who have zero paid staff. The ones who are survivor engaged and survivor led. The ones who are making a real difference. Do you know what we could do with $1 million? With $500,000? Investing in organizations that are survivor engaged/approved/led with folks like veterans and ex-addicts and moms and dads and regular folk - THAT'S how we move the needle on this work. Collaboration. If the same uber rich non-"profits" keep getting these hundreds of millions of dollars a year, then you can believe you will continue to see the rates in trafficking, recidivism, addiction, homelessness, and abuse continue to sky rocket. Until you start addressing the root causes at a GRASS ROOTS LEVEL- there will be no change. The people closest to the issues are the people closest to the solutions. Period. Organizations bringing in $100-200 mil a year are nowhere near the issue. I said what I said.
What a unique way to announce a philanthropic gift. Last week, MacKenzie Scott quietly posted to her Yield Giving website that she had made another $2b in donations to 305 organizations. The announcement was only 54 words, and the “I” was not one of them. Having worked in philanthropy for many years, that is definitely the fewest words per dollar I’ve ever seen in an announcement – by my math, $39 million per word! To paraphrase Hamilton, I hope Scott will inspire others to “talk less, give more.” Thank you Thalia Beaty, for spotlighting Scott’s generosity. https://bit.ly/3RgDWAH

Holy smokes, Bill! Thank you so much for this vote of confidence, I appreciate it, and you! The project Bill so generously helped support is a story-world called The True History of OZ: BOOK ONE - The Tin Man Runs the Town. How I came to be in possession of the 5 volumes of The True History of OZ books is a heck of a story, but for another time. They obviously predate L. Frank Baum’s book, by (I’m no expert) maybe 100 years, they are quite fragile, and so far as I know, they are the only copies that exist. Now, how BAUM came to be in possession of these 5 books is a heckuva story too. (Or maybe just a legend. It’s never been proven). Anyway, more about the story here: https://theWizardofOZ.org I am designing a TTRPG (table-top role-playing game) to introduce this story-world. I soon will begin a 100-day awareness campaign, and each person that sponsors a day of that campaign will get a Limited Edition version of the game, (1 of 100), as well as other Limited Edition media based on The True History of OZ. Support the campaign, learn more about the Limited Editions: https://lnkd.in/gm8fdQqw
