Now if anywhere in the world one would bet where technological adoption can happen quickest then it must be India. Great to see such initiative and very aware of the challenges it brings with it. Adoption of Fastag RFID based ETC tolling system wasn't easy so GNSS based tolling system will involve another shift. Fastag resulted in reducing revenue leakages significantly, how will GNSS impact India toll road investment attractiveness, I wonder.

With a recent notification Ministry of Road Transport & Highways - India amended the #NationalHighway rules to include provisions on Global Navigation Satellite System #GNSS based electronic toll collection in India. India is set to introduce a new satellite-based toll collection system, a global first. Using GNSS and GPS, this system charges vehicles based on the distance traveled, eliminating toll plazas and improving the commuter experience. Fastag was not effective enough to free us from long lines at toll plazas, so Nitin Gadkari wants to employ the next level of technology available to help us save time. Over a decade ago, the collection of tolls on highways was purely done in cash or via cards, until FASTags were introduced in 2014. The good news is that the GNSS system will work simultaneously with the FASTag system. So while you may not be required to remove your FASTags immediately, you can do so gradually in the future. This allows commuters to make a smooth transition to upgrading from FASTags to the GNSS system. While the FASTag system is faster than the regular toll charging system, people still end up in queues during peak traffic hours. 🌐 Revolutionizing Toll Collection in India with GNSS The shift towards satellite-based tolling on Indian highways is set to significantly boost toll revenues by an estimated ₹10,000 crore annually, as highlighted by the Honourable Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The government is phasing out section-based toll collection in favor of GNSS-based (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) open tolling, aiming for fairer and more accurate toll charges based on real kilometers traveled. GNSS tolling offers a more accurate and equitable system, eliminating the frustration of overpaying for short trips. This change is expected to enhance road efficiency, reduce travel costs, and improve traffic management. #FASTag reduced the average wait time at toll plazas from 714 seconds to under 50 seconds on highways and decreased export release time from 101 hours to 22 hours. With the implementation of GNSS, we can expect ZERO wait times. For our industry, this transition means logistics operators can now optimize delivery routes with pinpoint accuracy, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
