In 2022 Steamboat set an audacious goal to open an Employer-Based child care center. We knew it was a critical benefit for our staff, but we struggled with the necessary subsidy, since child care is NEVER a profit center. When Moms First and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) asked us to be a part of a groundbreaking study to understand Child Care ROI and make the economic case for child care benefits, we were all in. The results were released earlier this week and spoiler alert: Child care benefits pay for themselves. 1 in 3 employees balance parenthood and work. Yet, only 12% of all U.S. workers have access to #ChildCare benefits through their employer — and just 6% of part-time or low-income workers. And when parents don’t have child care, they cut back on work hours or leave the workforce entirely — causing businesses to lose money and our economy to take a hit. What did we learn from the study? ✅ Retaining as few as 1% of eligible employees can cover the cost of childcare benefits ✅ All 5 companies — across industries, company size, and employee mix — saw a positive return on investment up to 425%, when investing in child care benefits for their employees. ✅ Child care benefits helped Steamboat employees avoid an average of 13 days of absences annually, boosting employee productivity. ✅ Steamboat working parents have 8 out of 10 job satisfaction with the Employer Based Child Care Center ✅ 70% of Steamboat working parents say child care benefits help them stay in the workforce and 90% of parents intent to be working at Steamboat in a year (#rentenion!)
