Your speechie will be asking you for it anyway - so get it done!  ✅ Your GP *may* be able to provide you with a referral that allows you to get Medicare rebates for speech therapy. Your GP determines your eligibility so you need to speak to them about it,  ✅ This referral does not give you free or bulk billed sessions. We often get people asking us if they get free sessions with a referral. There are no free sessions. We do have rebated sessions with a GP EPC referral! Ask us about them.  ✅ A proper assessment by a speech pathologist is crucial to understand what the underlying challenges may be, to craft and recommend proper goals and therapy methods. “How to improve hearing and vision support in aged care: Survey Study” Around 90% of aged care residents in Australia have hearing and/or vision loss. This affects their quality of life and increases the cost of care. Researchers at The University of Queensland are leading a nationwide study to improve hearing and vision support for people living in residential aged care. However, participation in aged care research is often limited, so we are running a short survey (10 minutes) about what factors influence research participation. We are inviting responses from people who either: (1) work in residential aged care (e.g., managers, nurses, allied health professionals),  (2) are residents in aged care who have hearing/vision loss; or (3) have family living in aged care with hearing/vision loss. The anonymous survey has two sections: (1) Information about you (and your family member if applicable) e.g. gender, level of education, living situation, hearing/vision/dementia history. (2) Factors that influence your participation in aged care research.

One system change objective in our State Plan is aimed at quality healthcare for people with disabilities. How medical providers think about disability and provide care is one aspect to improve quality of care.  This new report from the The Hastings Center targets Anti-Ableist Medical Education. Understanding the Distinctions Between Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs): A Comprehensive Guide

An employee works as a speech-language pathologist in a large, metropolitan school district, traveling between two elementary schools and a high school. After giving birth, she requests a private space for lactation within each assigned school. The school district agrees, but the private space it provides to her in the high school was on a different floor than her work area. Is this legal? Did this employer meet is legal obligations regarding the provision of a “private lactation space?” There are two federal statutes in play here — the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections (PUMP) for Nursing Mothers Act and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) — which each answer this question differently. Under the PUMP Act, employers must provide employees “a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public … to express breast milk.” There is no requirement under the PUMP Act that such a lactation space be located on the same floor as, or otherwise close in proximity to, the lactating employee’s primary work area. The PWFA, however, has something different to say on this issue. The PWFA requires employers to reasonably accommodate “pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions.” Lactation is a “related medical condition” that an employer must accommodate under the PWFA. Specifically, as to the location of a lactation space, the recently published regulations to the PWFA provide that a lactation space must be “in reasonable proximity to the employee’s usual work area.” Thus, a lactation room that is on a different floor than an employee’s regular work area might not violate the PUMP Act, but it likely violates the PWFA (and by association Title VII) … unless there is a bona fide reason a private space simply cannot be provided in reasonable proximity to the employee’s usual work area. #lactation #PUMPact #PWFA #reasonableaccommodation
