I am still finding out about older Deaf adults being placed into Residential Homes with hearing staff and residents. Are the Social Workers/Commissioners not aware of services available to Deaf people requiring Residential Care? I understand that they need to try options within their own framework but this puts unnessecary delay/stress on the person recieving ‘person-centred’ support in their ‘best interests’. This creates the wrong environment for assessment. This leads to misunderstood behaviours (BSL being visual) which can cause presumptions that they are agitated. They can be withdrawn thus have depression all of which leads to additional medication when the simple solution is communication. More needs to be done.

Senior Specialist Hearing Impairment and deaf affairs at National Council of and for persons with disabilities
Hearing loss deserves to be addressed professionally. We at Road To Independence, Global Peer Support Network, Advocates of Individualized Hearing Care™, do not promote the purchase of hearing aids or any personal amplifier without the necessary medical intervention. We cannot make any recommendation from a legislative perspective without a proper diagnostic evaluation by a legitimate healthcare professional in the field of audiology. However, we support all people with hearing loss regardless of whether they use hearing aids or not, but we require a functional report indicating the degree of loss, the functional impact of the limitation, as well as possible accommodations. Because all people are entitled to equal opportunities, it is of critical importance to be able to determine whether the person can legally be seen as a person with a disability. What is the difference between a clinical and a functional report, and why is it important to note them? Click below: https://lnkd.in/dpwspn62 These principles may be applicable to all five forms of impairment or disability. For more information on the matter as well as on accredited training for professionals, contact Fanie du Toit at [email protected].

The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) 2007 statement continues to follow the "1-3-6 EHDI Plan" as outlined in the first three of the eight principles presented in the position statement. These principles are: All #infants should have access to hearing screening using a physiologic measure at no later than 1 month of age. All infants who do not pass the initial #hearing #screening and the subsequent rescreening should have appropriate #audiological and medical evaluations to confirm the presence of hearing loss at no later than 3 months of age. All infants with confirmed #permanent hearing loss should receive #early intervention services as soon as possible after #diagnosis but at no later than 6 months of age. A simplified, single point of entry into an intervention system that is appropriate for children with hearing loss is optimal. The EHDI system should be family centered with infant and #family rights and privacy guaranteed through informed choice, shared decision-making, and parental consent in accordance with state and federal guidelines. Families should have access to information about all intervention and treatment options and counseling regarding hearing loss.
