4100 children are excluded from school every single day. We were alarmed to see new Department for Education data showing that school exclusions have been skyrocketing over the past couple of years. Our CEO, Kiran Gill, said: “The sobering rise in children losing learning through exclusions shows the need for a joined-up approach. We can’t separate out policy response on behaviour from the special needs crisis, mental health problems or unequal opportunities for the poorest children. “I’m looking forward to working with frontline leaders this year to look at the challenge in the round and get the policy solutions these vulnerable children urgently need.” Over the next academic year, we will be exploring this in more depth via our Who’s Losing Learning Coalition with Impetus - Backing the best, IPPR and Mission 44. "𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 (𝗦𝗘𝗡) 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮 "𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹”" As we continue to witness a significant rise in the number of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), it's becoming painfully clear that our current education system is struggling to keep up. The number of SEND students continues to grow exponentially, yet the availability of suitable school places remains woefully inadequate. This not only hinders the educational development of these children but also places immense pressure on families and educators. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? - Is it lack of Funding? - Do we need to provide more training and resources to teachers to best support SEND students? - Are more specialist schools needing to be built? Which ever way we look at it, whilst it is clear there is a clear effort being made to give these children the support they need and everyone is feeling the ever increasing pressure for change, something isn't working. Every child, regardless of their needs, should have the opportunity to thrive in an inclusive and supportive educational environment, where they feel like they belong! But what does that look like? #SEND #SchoolPlaces #SENDSupport #BaltimoreDNA Baltimore Consulting Limited

Amidst a concerning trend reflective of a broader backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the recent decision by the Perris Union High School District to eliminate critical support roles, notably the director of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department, sends ripples of alarm through our educational communities. These actions undermine equity and inclusivity, posing significant threats to students' wellbeing and academic success. The packed board meeting, with impassioned testimonies from community members, students, and educators, underscores the collective outcry against these detrimental cuts. Voices like Rocco Nelms, who presented a petition signed by 190 individuals from Perris High School expressing concerns about mental health and wellbeing, serve as reminders of the real impact of these decisions. As advocates for social justice and educational equity, MSC recognizes the pivotal role of DEI efforts in fostering environments where all students feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. The decision to dismantle essential support systems within the district perpetuates systemic inequalities and fails to prioritize the needs of marginalized communities, particularly students of color. We must remain vigilant in challenging regressive actions that erode progress towards creating inclusive and equitable learning environments. #DEIBacklash #EducationalJustice #Solidarity #StandWithPerrisStudents https://lnkd.in/gBbP2yne

*St. Peter's College Old Boys' Union Launches Student Well-being Center in Collaboration with College Authorities* St. Peter's College Old Boys' Union, in collaboration with College Authorities, has launched a Student Well-being Center to address mental health in education. This initiative aims to provide essential emotional support, promote mental health awareness, and offer early intervention and prevention strategies through campaigns, workshops, and outreach. The Center, staffed by trained counselors, offers a safe and comfortable space for students and parents. It aims to create a campus culture that prioritizes mental health and reduces stigma. The Student Well-being Center is made possible through the generous support of Golden Gleam, whose funding in 2023 laid the foundation for this transformative initiative. Building upon this success, the Old Boys' Union eagerly anticipates continued collaboration with Golden Gleam in 2024 and beyond, ensuring sustained resources for mental health advocacy and support.

Why is nurture needed in schools? 🤔🏫 We’re seeing a dramatic spike in anxiety and absenteeism levels due to the impact of the pandemic and broader socio-economic challenges. This makes it incredibly hard to give children and young people the education they need and deserve. There are proven ways to tackle this crisis and #nurture is one of them. ✅ Nurture supports all children and young people to be able to learn, and enables teachers to identify, understand and address pupils’ social, emotional and mental health needs. A nurturing approach helps to improve attendance, behaviour and attainment, whilst creating calmer classroom environments and reducing #exclusions. 💫 See our latest annual report for more information on why all children need nurture: https://bit.ly/3Y9KypV

A few days ago The Scottish Government published their education statistics. We know that school exclusions have an impact on children & young people immediately, and in the long-term. At includem we work with children and young people who are struggling to engage with education. Violence in schools has been a major topic of conversation and it is worrying to see the rise in exclusions for fighting and physical assault. This is not just worrying for teachers, but for children and young people. Schools are becoming unsafe spaces. Funding for mental health, additional support for learning & participation of children & young people in designing and delivering interventions are part of the solution but whatever it is, we need to act to ensure children and young people are respected & safe. #includemTL #childrenandyoungpeople #ABetterLife Iain Forbes OBE Hannah Paylor Mike Stevenson Kevin O'Hare Jacqueline Cassidy Bruce Marks Lesley Taylor Martin Dorchester Martyn Walker Lisa-Kristin Weylandt
