"War is a huge Tech Event, said Ronen Nir at the IATI - Israel Advanced Technology Industries investors meet-up tonight. "It will be followed by enormous wave of innovation, we've just received the strongest tailwind ever". Eyal Niv added that in HiTech the Generative AI is a bigger challenge than the war nowadays. Israeli #HiTech was overwhelmed for two weeks and it starts raising its head now, the experts think. Sales, marketing, services - continue business as usual; it is R&D that got the hardest hit. 10% of the Israeli R&D workforce got drafted in the Army. But war is not a surprise in this latitude: Israeli tech community is extremely resilient. The ones that stayed in the offices just work overtime hours, and do it proudly, replacing the missing colleagues. So what about the global investment trends in Israel? Slowdown is clear. Significant amounts of international capital have been withdrawn even before the war. But you invest in Israel because of tremendous returns, and this is not going to change. The fundraising will restart in the second half of 2024. Thank you, Karin Mayer Rubinstein and Eli Groner for arranging such a sharp-focused event, so many clear takeaways! #LatviaStandsWithIsrael #Israel #StartupNation #War #Resilience #Investment #VC #capitalraising #HiTech #slowdown #fundraising

It was great to see many PE industry colleagues yesterday at the FVCA - Pรครคomasijoittajat Fall Seminar 2023! Ilkka Kivimรคki from Maki.vc and I were invited to share our thoughts and experiences on international fundraising on stage. ๐ CapMan has been active in international fundraising for over 20 years, but the internationalisation of our LP base has really accelerated over the recent years. In 2016, our AUM was EUR 2.7bn and only 10% of that was from non-Nordic investors. Since then, we have doubled our AUM to over EUR 5bn and at the same time share of international investors has grown from 10% to 55%. ๐ I was asked, what are the main differences between fundraising domestically vs internationally? There are a lot of similarities, of course, but some differences as well. To name a few: โณ Time. Building PE investor relationships, trust and even brand awareness in new markets takes time, often years. Itโs thus important for GPs to start early on. Build a vision where you would like to be with your investor base 2-3 fund vintages ahead, and be patient. ๐ Product fit. Try to identify investors whose PE program has a good fit with your strategy and offering. While local investors might generally have a bit more flexible mandate to support their local managers, with cross boarder investments institutions often have well defined strategy and mature PE portfolios, and have thus very specific requirements for new GPs who they have often been following for many years. ๐ Why Nordics? Most of the European institutional investors are very knowledgeable about the Nordic region and local markets, but especially when meeting with non-European investors, one needs to convince them first about the Nordic market opportunity and the benefits of teaming up with a local specialist compared to investing in pan-European or global funds.
โBuilding Bridges with International LPs in Fundraisingโ was the topic when Mari Simula from CapMan and Ilkka Kivimรคki from Maki.vc took the stage yesterday at the Finnish Venture Capital Associationโs Fall Seminar. Big thanks to everyone who joined and FVCA - Pรครคomasijoittajat for making the event happen! Photo: FVCA

Kudos to Norrsken for sharing this number: only 7,36% of teams who have applied to their accelerator are funded by women. I personally believe that women need more than a flashy website and nice pictures to be convinced to go through the application process. There are so many hurdles women are used to experience in day to day interactions that organizations who want to attract a more diverse audience need to invest much more to making sure their program is seen as a safe space, does not only treat everyone equal, but actually is inclusive by recognizing the individual needs of under-indexed groups. It needs to highlight that they understand that diversity is more than a number to reach, but what it brings to the table, and that having less men lead the next generation of businesses is a necessity for true change. How can this be done? By building relationships between people, because business and marketing communication has become so untrustworthy, that the only way to counter this is to turn your people into advocates, create low-threshold events where they can meet, online and physically. That this may not fit the fast paced VC world is part of the truth why the number is so low ... not every business model is attractive for all so sometimes we have to ask: what impact has the core business proposition on the diversity goals?
7,36% That is the number of female-founded teams who have applied to the Norrsken Accelerator this year. Itโs above the average % of venture capital going to female founders each year. But itโs far from where we want to be. We want to raise our game. Tag a female founder you think should apply.
