𝗗𝗲𝗺𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 I honestly thought the narratives would have changed by now. However, I was perplexed to see that current agricultural students in tertiary institutions still experience the same misconceptions I faced years ago.Last week, I was privileged to attend the AXACE Conference of the Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Department of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. So many misconceptions and myths exist regarding studying agriculture, the greatest being becoming a farmer (which is not outrightly bad since we all depend on farmers for food). However, it is important to identify these misconceptions and straighten out the solutions. As a year one student, I shied away from telling people I was a student of agriculture because it was not deemed a ‘professional’ course and because I was told there were no significant career opportunities there. It is more baffling that individuals with non-agricultural background enter the agricultural sector and thrive really well. In the next few weeks, I will explore various baffling misconceptions about studying agriculture. These misconceptions have not only dwindled interest but also caused many undergraduates and graduates to leave so much value on the table. As an agricultural graduate, expert or undergraduate what misconceptions have you identified in this field? #Agstrides #AgCareer #Agriculture #Careergrowth

Agriculture! . When I got admission to study an aspect of Agricultural Science - Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, I was wondering what is all about this field. . For years, I had to navigate and discover how broad the field of Agriculture is. I wished I knew all these information earlier, this would have helped me in weighing and taking decisions around a career paths earlier. . One of the things I decided to do is to make sure I often have meaniful career chat with those presently in school or those trying to take any course that pertains to Agriculture Science. . The earlier one is informed, the better one begins earlier their career journey because most students are deprived of all that this field entails, and many fall for the crude information that agriculture is all about crude tools, and crude ways of farming without professional and divers opportunities. . I will be Having a session tonight with some students from the Faculty Agricultural Sciences(DLCF). . EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES IN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR We would have time to have a meaningful discussion believing lives will be informed better on what and how to journey in the field of Agriculture. #SustainableAgriculture #ZeroHunger #AgriculturalExtension #SDGs2030 #FoodSecurity #AgriculturalEducation #AgriculturalCareer

Reflecting on the recent event, I can't help but reminisce about my journey in agricultural science. From Junior High School, where agriculture was one of the ten subjects we studied, to Senior High School, where I focused on Agriculture Science, the foundation for my passion was laid. This early exposure to farming, guided by my mother's teachings, ignited my interest in agricultural science. However, recent reports from headteachers highlight a concerning trend - a decline in student enrollment in agricultural courses. This raises questions about the perceived attractiveness of agricultural science among young learners. It's alarming to see a course meant to prepare our rural youth to contribute to our nation's food security becoming "unattractive." During a field visit, I encountered a first-year agriculture science student who missed out on engaging with the MASIRS project and had irregular school attendance. This emphasizes the disconnect between agricultural science and practical farming experiences among rural students. This experience underscores the need for more initiatives like the Making Agricultural Science Interesting for Rural Students project. By organizing engaging exercises and providing support to rural students, we can inspire a renewed interest in agricultural science at higher levels of education. I believe that with proper organization and support, initiatives like MASIRS can have a positive impact on rural agriculture science students and junior high students alike. Let's work together to cultivate a new generation of agricultural enthusiasts passionate about feeding our nation and driving agricultural innovation. #agriculture #agriculturaleducation #farming #agriculturalscience #JHS #SHS
We recently visited two schools in the Central Region for our MASIRS(Making Agricultural Science Interesting for Rural Students) program, where we aimed at introducing the program to the students and discussed issues on igniting a passion for agriculture in these students. Attached is a brief report on the project, understanding students’ interest in Agriculture and how we can engage them to achieve results. We want to hear from YOU! Share your thoughts, ideas, or any comments you may have on the report. Our commitment to inspiring rural students to explore the vast opportunities in agriculture remains unwavering! We'll continue to meet with these students regularly to further engage them on the MASIRS program. A HUGE thank you to our dedicated Project Coordinator Isaac Appiah-Asare Koomson (MPhil., BSc.) and project volunteer Isaac Kweku Junior Mensah who made this program a success! #TBF #MASIRS #ruAgric #DowntownRevolution

Wed, 11/09/2024 8:51AM If at all we're going to rescue our beautiful country, we need to accord institutions of higher learning the seriousness required to create solutions. I'll give you an example: I stay very close to a public university and have observed enough to make conclusions. Let's focus on the following courses: => Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Education and Extension). => Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Biotechnology. => Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Economics and Resource Management. Now, my expectation was such institution will work closely with local farmers to develop solutions they need to improve their animal and crop yield. I expected excited students moving through villages to conduct research into what farmers need to make small-scale farming work. I talk to village farmers and nobody has ever approached them to ask why they cannot produce enough food. Nobody has even bothered to test their soil. When going to college is all about getting your papers and getting out to find a job, then don't ask why nothing in your country works. Nobody will do it for us. Colleges should be all about R&D. The world is amazing. You try to care about people but realize nobody cares about anybody. You turn and ask God how this can be love, and the silence is louder than indifference you see. #journaling #meditation #diary

Throwback to My BSc Agriculture Days: Sharing Knowledge, Growing Communities As I reflect on my journey in agriculture, I'm filled with fond memories of my BSc days. One experience stands out vividly - the day I conducted a lecture on mango grafting for local farmers in our area. The air was thick with anticipation as I stood before a group of eager faces, their eyes reflecting years of agricultural wisdom mixed with curiosity for new techniques. Armed with my newfound knowledge and a passion for sustainable farming, I dove into the intricacies of mango grafting. We discussed the benefits of grafting - how it combines the best traits of different mango varieties, leading to more resilient and productive trees. As I demonstrated the technique, I saw understanding dawn on their faces. The moment when theory met practice was truly magical. What struck me most was the exchange of knowledge. While I shared academic insights, the farmers shared generations of practical experience. This symbiosis of learning embodied the essence of agricultural education - bridging the gap between research and real-world application. That day wasn't just about mango grafting. It was about community, sustainability, and the power of shared knowledge. It reinforced my belief in the importance of agricultural outreach and the impact we can have when we bring education to the field. Looking back, I realize how those experiences shaped my career path and deepened my commitment to agricultural development. Here's to the beautiful days of learning, teaching, and growing together! 🌱🥭 #AgricultureMemories #KnowledgeSharing #CommunityOutreach #LocalCommunity #AgricultureEntrepreneurship #Grafting #Budding #ExtentionEducation #Agricos4L
