Some creative activities require a great deal of physical effort. A sculptor, hacking an image out of marble or granite, or fashioning some unique work with wrought iron and a welding torch, are examples. But while no doubt a workout can creative activities such as these be considered a sport? Apparently in the 21st Century is can, as Break Dancing has now become an event at the Olympic Games in Paris. Simply called ‘Breaking’ (as I guess that’s cooler) an article on the msn.ca website described it as: "Breaking is a new Olympic sport for 2024. The competition has two gender-based medal events – one for 16 men and one for 16 women – and athletes are known as ‘B-Boys’ and ‘B-Girls’, who will compete against each other in solo battles. The breaker with the highest number of points and rounds scored by the judges over his or her opponent in a solo battle will advance to the next round." In my mind art and sport are two separate things and bringing this very specialized, urban-originated activity to the Olympics seems a little dangerous – not to mention with limited appeal. Rural folk should now demand equal time, so at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles expect to see Square Dancing (probably to be called Squaring) or maybe Hay Bale Tossing as new events. After all it’s only fair. #olympics #breaking #sport

I followed Ollie Strachan’s attempt to complete the “Arch to Arc” triathlon challenge that involves running from London to Dover (87 miles), swimming the English Channel, cycling 181 miles to Paris. 🏃♂️🏊♀️ 🚴♂️ I find it fascinating to follow these challenges and people that attempt to do them. During the Channel swim, in the middle of the night and whilst having a feed, this conversation went on between Ollie and the support crew: Support crew : Ollie all good ? Ollie: Yeah my mind …… (and he starts drinking) Support crew : Ollie your mind is what ? Ollie: My mind is just playing demons with me. Support crew : Ok, sort it out! Positive! You got this! How many times have we found ourselves in the dark, in the middle of a challenge and the negative internal chatter kicks in? How many times have you let the ego take control, and work against you ? 🌑 Another chat between Ollie and his crew whilst feeding at dawn of the day: Support crew : Sunshine is coming , it will burn off . Here is the sunshine! 🌅 Ollie: Little bit of grey patch Support crew : It is ok! you are doing great! 🤗 Everyone needs a support team around them! Everyone needs a mentor or a coach to support them and to show them that “sunshine is coming”, “that it is ok”, “ sort it out” , “get on with it”, “you are not alone”. You may have done the hard work, you may be very talented, but still you should always have a support network. Businesses have to enable the creation of that support network. Managers in the “support boat” need to check how their team members are doing and lead them to success ! Hats off to Ollie and to Tracy in the support boat who showed incredible leadership skills! ⭐ https://lnkd.in/eRU7F8_F Ollie completed the completed the the “Arch to Arc” triathlon challenge ! Well done! #teamculture #coaching #mindset #leadership #endurance #sportpsychology

FRENCH WORD OF THE DAY... "Tocard" - roughly pronounced toe-carr- has several meanings in French, but you are most likely to hear it used as an insult, basically to mean ‘loser’. This version of the word technically describes someone as ‘inept or incapable’ in addition to having no principles. As you can imagine, this usage is rather colloquial, so you might want to avoid using it in formal settings. As for the origins of the word, there are a few theories. A common one is that it is a combination of the word ‘toc’ which can mean a piece of jewellery without worth - not to be confused with the chef’s hat, which is toque - coupled with the suffix ‘-ard’ which often gives a pejorative sense to a word, usually to describe a person. 'Tocard' can also be used to describe someone who either done or said something in a thoughtless or off-colour way. The final definition of the word, which might help explain how it has come to mean ‘loser’ has to do with race horses. For decades, equestrians have described horses with little chance of winning a race as 'les tocards'. If you want a synonym for 'tocard', you might describe someone as 'nul'. Some French people - usually younger folks - will even use the English word ‘loser’ (though with a French intonation). Use it like this: C'est un vrai tocard, ce type. Il a complètement raté sa présentation.. – That guy is a real loser. He completely botched his presentation. Comment peut-on voter pour ce tocard ? Qu'a-t-il accompli ? – How can anyone vote for this loser? What has he accomplished? europeanamericantravel.com
