MIT spinout SiTration, Inc., which raised $11.8 million in seed capital led by venture capital firm 2150 earlier this month, is revolutionizing the extraction and refining of copper, cobalt, nickel, lithium, precious metals, and other materials critical to manufacturing clean-energy technologies such as electric motors, wind turbines, and batteries. Its initial target applications are recovering the materials from complex mining feed streams, spent lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles, and various metals refining processes. The core technology is based on work done at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop a novel type of membrane made from silicon, which is durable enough to withstand harsh chemicals and high temperatures while conducting electricity. It’s also highly tunable, meaning it can be modified or adjusted to suit different conditions or target specific materials. SiTration’s technology also incorporates electro-extraction, a technique that uses electrochemistry to further isolate and extract specific target materials. Everyone asks, "how much does it cost?" Read our article to learn about Enspired Solutions recent treatability testing on destruction-ready foam fractionate from PFAS-contaminated surface water. It includes destruction endpoints and the site-specific, estimated price per gallon to destroy PFAS and achieve steady-state PFAS treatment.
Enspired Solutions recently evaluated our novel PFAS destruction technology, photo-activated reductive defluorination (PRD), for treatment of destruction-ready foam fractionate from surface water. This work was done at the request of a state regulatory agency. Study Highlights: 🔷 Destroyed over 99.99% of PFAS in foam fractionate 🔷 Reduced total PFAS concentration from 4,000,000 to 320 ng/L 🔷 Estimated site-specific cost for PFAS destruction at $ $3.91/gallon concentrate Objectives addressed in a bench-top treatability test were 1) Demonstrate PRD efficacy on PFAS in a sample of surface water foamate, and 2) Provide a site-specific cost projection for the destruction of 99.9% PFAS in 50 gallons per day of foamate.
