Lightweight Composites - Integrated Thermoplastic Process with Minimal The Engel organomelt process shapes and functionalizes thermoplastic fiber composite semi-finished products, such as organic sheet and UD tapes, in a single integrated process step. Immediately after molding, thermoplastic plastics from the organic sheet matrix material group are injected into the same mold for reinforcement or assembly components. This process not only achieves highly efficient, fully automated production but also contributes to the circular economy. The consistent thermoplastic single-material approach simplifies the subsequent recycling of components. The Engel victory 660/160 injection molding machine, equipped with the Engel easix articulated robot, automates the production of inspection flaps for aircraft fuselages. The production unit also includes an infrared oven, developed and manufactured by Engel. The organic sheets are heated in the infrared oven, placed in the mold by a robot arm, molded in the mold, and then immediately overmolded. Automotive lightweighting is primarily achieved through the adoption of new materials, new processes, and optimized structural designs. Its classification is mainly based on the technologies and methods used. In the 1970s, after the first oil crisis, automotive lightweighting began to be taken seriously as manufacturers sought to reduce vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency. From 2020 to the present day, automotive lightweighting has been involved in all aspects of the entire vehicle, including the body, chassis, powertrain, etc. Additionally, the wave of electrification has brought new challenges and opportunities for lightweighting, especially in the design and material selection of battery packs. The upstream area of automotive lightweighting mainly includes the production and supply of lightweight materials, such as high-strength steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and carbon fiber composites. These material suppliers usually work closely with automotive component manufacturers to develop high-performance materials suitable for automotive lightweighting. The downstream application industries of automotive lightweighting are extensive, covering the entire automotive manufacturing industry. From body structure, chassis, powertrain to interior and exterior components, the application of lightweighting technology can be seen. SAIC Group Applies for Composite Material Simulation Patent to Aid in Automotive Lightweighting Technology On December 16, 2023, as reported by Financial World, the State Intellectual Property Office announced that SAIC Motor Corporation Limited has applied for a patent titled "A Method and Apparatus for Composite Material Simulation." The method first involves acquiring material properties of the target composite material in a primary fiberglass orientation, then constructing a model to be processed. This model is divided into a first component with the fiberglass orientation as the primary one, to which material properties are assigned, resulting in a highly accurate simulation model of fiberglass-reinforced composite materials. This application addresses inaccuracies in current modeling methods for fiberglass composite materials, reflecting the influence of fiber orientation and the differences in anisotropy. Applicable to the simulation modeling of various anisotropic materials, this method not only improves simulation accuracy but also facilitates automotive lightweighting technology.   Carbon Revolution, Lightweight Wheel Supplier, Plans to Build a Factory in North America According to foreign media reports, Australian carbon fiber wheel supplier Carbon Revolution is considering Mexico as the location for its second factory, due to rapidly growing order volumes. The company expects the new factory to have an annual production capacity of several hundred thousand wheels. Carbon Revolution stated that the wheels it produces weigh only about half as much as traditional aluminum wheels, potentially increasing the range of electric vehicles by 5% to 10%. CEO Jake Dingle said, "We are preparing a factory in North America, likely in Mexico, to serve our clients in North America and other regions. Currently, we are considering several locations and establishing relationships with potential partners to support rapid expansion." The company currently produces wheels at its Waurn Ponds factory in Australia, which has the capacity to produce around 70,000 wheels annually. Dingle revealed that the manufacturing process at this factory is highly automated, and the North American factory will adopt the same model.
