𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 Did you know the origin of the word theatre? It comes from Greek 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯 and means “a place of seeing”. Theatres are great places of seeing different perspectives about life and society. Theatres also function as a mirror to society and invite critical thinking and dialogue. And while most historical theatres have been built for sovereigns and nobility, I was excited to discover that 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝘃𝗮𝗿, 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟲𝟭𝟮 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀. It was a convergence point for all walks of life – from fishermen, artisans, and peasants to the nobility, educated people, the rich, and the ruling elite. In a word, the theater was a place of #diversity and #inclusion where everyone had access to, regardless of their identity and social status. This was unheard of at the time and as a result, the Hvar Public Theatre became the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. What is one thing you have discovered this summer? #BeatrixEderCoaching Image description: View on Hvar town from a hill; terracotta colored rooftops; a tree and several bushes in the foreground; dark blue sea with lots of boats on it; several smaller islands in the background.

How we use our public spaces to embrace different communities is a vital part of how we develop as a city. Culture can be at the heart of those decisions. We're urging the cultural sector and creatives to take part in the consultation on the future of Armada Way 👇
Culture plays an important part in Plymouth’s future and the new proposals for Armada Way. The city centre is already home to The Box, Plymouth, Theatre Royal Plymouth and hosts an annual programme of live events and that’s why we want to create more spaces to: Host markets Concerts Exhibitions Performances And much more Hear what James, Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Plymouth, had to say about the new proposals. I’m not sure how many of you know it, but we have Frank Lloyd Wright’s only freestanding theater in the world - the Kalita Humphreys Theater - right next to Uptown, and it’s falling apart. Take some time to read this article and then start letting everyone you know (especially your rich friends and elected officials) how important it is. #preservation #atchitecture #culturalinstitutions
"The Kalita Humphreys Theater was built by arguably the most famous American architect of the twentieth century. It’s now a shell of its former self, and the city can’t decide how—or if—it’ll restore it." Read more >>

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the National Theatre – for the first year I lived in London it was more like my home away from home. Parenthood, more responsibility at work and various other boring aspects of true adulthood mean I don't go nearly as much as I would like, not just to the NT but to any theatre at all. So I'll be watching this pilot eagerly. I appreciate that they've taken into account all the obstacles their audience says prevent them from attending, which is an exhaustive and admirable task. But is an *earlier* 6:30pm start time the solution? For me, making it midweek for 7:30pm is often a struggle – I have very real memories of sprinting across Waterloo Bridge to get there before the curtain rises. Even if I am earlier, it's nice to get to the theatre, have a little sit down and prepare myself for the performance ahead. I certainly understand that people want to have a drink and dinner post-theatre – but isn't this an issue with London's social scene in general? In New York, restaurants and bars stay open well past 10 or 11pm, and so there is ample time to enjoy yourself post-performance. As some have said, this pilot is more emblematic of how London's cultural centre is slowly fading away in the name of "convenience". You can probably tell I'm a bit torn on this subject! It's definitely worth the NT trialling, but I just wonder what we lose when we shift everything earlier. What do you think?
