Fractional CFO/Controller | Helping SMEs Drive Financial Success | Training and Developing Future Finance Leaders
A Month in the Life of a Financial Controller As a financial controller, every month is a whirlwind of activity. There's never a dull moment, from accounting matters to supporting the CFO to working with teams and improving internal controls and accounting processes by leveraging technology. It's a challenging and rewarding role requiring a diverse skill set and multitasking ability. Throughout the month, the financial controller constantly juggles various tasks, from analyzing financial transactions and preparing reports to liaising with other departments and managing teams. It's a job that requires a lot of focus and attention to detail, but it's also gratifying to see the tangible impact on the company's bottom line. Overall, being a financial controller is a dynamic and exciting career that keeps you on your toes daily. I have created this calendar that highlights the financial controller's monthly activities. I suggest focusing on the activities, not the dates. The dates may differ depending on the organization. Here are the key activities: ✅ Supporting the CFO ✅ Supporting and Developing the Team ✅ Strengthening Internal Controls ✅ Collaborating with the FP&A Team ✅ Collaborating with Development on Projects' Cost ✅ Collaborating with IT to Enhance Technology and Automation ✅ Collaborating with Legal on legal and regulatory matters ✅ Vendor and Contracts Negotiations ✅ Coordinating with Regulatory Authorities ✅ Enhancing Communication with other Departments ✅ Engaging with Internal and External Auditors ✅ Month-End and Year-End Closing ✅ Reviewing and Approving Financial Reports ✅ Relaxing and Recharging with Family ✅ Prioritizing Healthy Lifestyle ✅ Continuing the Journey of Learning What else can you add? #MAKAlpha #TheFinanceMasterclass coming soon! ------------------------------------------ - Follow Abdul Khaliq 🔔 - Sharing the essence of 20 years of journey. - I mentor and train finance and account professional. Head of Commercial Finance - Multi-site Brand - £85k 20% Equity 🍴 I am delighted to be working with a growing and already well-known brand to appoint a Head of Commercial Finance. With revenues of £40m and growing, I am working with the CFO to develop the next iteration of his leadership team. This newly created role will truly have a controlling vision of where they take the department. You will be contributing by delivering top- and bottom-line value; whatever can be automated should be. For now, VBA and SQL are more likely suitors than glossy visual analytics tools. Regular reporting and re-forecasting should make up 15-20% of your time, giving you plenty of time to evolve the function. Flipping from one strategic initiative to the next is your superpower. You should be able to operate at all levels, Exec all the way down. This is a high-ambition and low-ego team. No task should be deemed too small, but everyone's time is a valuable resource. A bit about you; - Qualified Accountant with demonstrable commercial experience in a multi-site and consumer-led business. - An empathetic leader; this is not determined by how many people you've managed. - A brilliant storyteller, you turn data into a beautifully crafted and objectively compelling vision. - Significant and varied experience: While Group FP&A is a useful starting point, we're looking for business-facing operators that crave operational and non-finance engagements. - Goal-oriented: This business has a lead investor who is looking to grow the enterprise value significantly in the next 4-5 years. When you set up your business things were relatively simple..... 👉No employees 👉Hardly any transactions 👉No one to answer to ... Hiring a full-time Finance Director is expensive!! You are looking at £75K to £120K ! So ... In steps the Fully Outsourced Finance Function.... We can handle all this for you, from bookkeeping, credit control and payroll to management accounts, to annual accounts and taxes to FD support. THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE HIRING AN OUTSOURCED FINANCE TEAM: 1️⃣ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲? Experience matters. Your advisors should understand your business model and industry to offer relevant insights. 2️⃣ 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞? If your business is on a high-growth trajectory, ensure your providers can grow with you, especially in resource-intensive roles like bookkeeping. Partnering with a financial manager capable of scaling with your organisation eliminates the hassle of constantly replacing and retraining your finance team as you expand. 3️⃣ 𝐃𝐨 𝐈 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦? Trust and rapport are key. A great finance partner will back you and have the tough conversations when needed. Ask yourself, do I genuinely like this team, and can we work effectively together? A good financial manager can be invaluable in achieving your business goals. Knowing how to choose the right one is half the battle! 🤺 https://sbo.financial/

Independent Agency FinOps support for Agency owners who want to make decisions faster, grow sustainably, make more profit and create a more valuable business #agencyfinopstriage
I have been helping a client to find their new financial controller. From defining the job spec, looking at candidates and being in the interviews. The biggest learning has been seeing the scope of what a Financial Controller now does. It has moved from a traditional back office role doing month end, chasing invoices and creating spreadsheets to being someone who is a huge part of the operations of the business. Involved in commercial meetings, system implementations, coaching as well as supporting the senior leadership team. We added "business partner" to the job spec because we wanted this person to be able to communicate well with the business and have a presence of someone who everyone could come to for support. I often see job specs in Agencies that are very task based; accruals, cashflow, vat returns, monthly reporting and payment runs. This wont excite people and if you want someone who can own the numbers but add value you need to have a job spec that has more than transactional work in it - this will get you better candidates and a better hire for your agency I don't pretend to know anything about recruitment and I have been guilty of thinking that the standard of senior finance people in Agencyland is quite low. But the interviews I have had this week have shown people who really understand the numbers, and are crucial and relied upon to the success of the business but also understand the importance of being a business partner who is able to communicate financials to non finance people.
