Due to an increasing demand for rail travel between Switzerland and Italy (mainly on Gotthard line), Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is preparing for an expansion of its services with an order for five additional Giruno: an eleven car EMU multiple-unit with a top speed of 250km/h from Stadler.

My latest video is now live! This week, we are traveling on France’s busiest rail corridor between Paris and Lyon with TGV Inoui onboard their most expensive accommodation, the Business Premiere. The Business Premiere was launched in 2021, a few months ahead of the arrival of Trenitalia France and its flagship service, the Frecciarossa. The Business Premiere is an “upgraded” first class, with better services onboard the train and at the station. If we compare it with the Frecciarossa, the Business Premiere is supposed to compete with the top-notch executive class, but is it enough? Unfortunately, no. Despite an outstanding lounge in Gare de Lyon and a good onboard staff, the quality of service is definitely lower than its Italian competitor. First of all, the Business Premiere is just a classic first class with a sticker that says “Business Premiere,” so don’t expect some fancy seat like on the Frecciarossa. Then the food – finally, TGV Inoui is serving some food to its most expensive class, but here, the choice is quite limited and only cold. The food is served in a plastic bowl with wooden cutlery. What’s the point of hiring a world-class chef like Thierry Marx to serve this in a plastic bowl? I compared it with the food service on Frecciarossa, and the gap is just gigantic. Serving the same type of food (which was very good) on a true plate would be better for the customer and the environment, since it could be reusable. Your competitors are doing it; why can’t you? As for the prices, the Business Premiere between Paris and Lyon is at a fixed price of €149, €10 more expensive than Frecciarossa. The TGV Business Premiere only makes sense if you want more flexibility in your travel options, since TGV Inoui offers 26 round trips between Paris and Lyon, while Frecciarossa, on the other hand, offers 5 round trips so far. Modal filter alert! Creating direct routes for active modes and indirect routes for motor vehicles is a fundamental principle of truly multi-modal transportation planning. This is an example of a temporary modal filter that involved building an extra, temporary bridge. In the US a bridge needing to be closed to motor vehicles because of weight limits or maintenance issues can often be an opportunity to establish the existing bridge as a modal filter. But in a country that deploys modal filters very effectively to start with like the NL, they have largely already reduced extraneous through motor vehicle traffic along this route and have a more balanced mix of modes.

Renfe is launching the 106 series on several routes, including Madrid-Gijón and Madrid-Santiago-A Coruña/Vigo, from 21 May. The Avlo Madrid-Cataluña, Madrid-Valencia, and Madrid-Alicante-Murcia will also feature these trains. A Superprecios campaign offers €7 fares to mark the occasion. The Avril trains’ introduction on the Avlo Madrid-Barcelona route will increase weekly seats by 4,450. The Madrid-Valencia, Madrid-Alicante, and Madrid-Murcia Avlo services will all be operated with 106 AVE trains, increasing seat availability.

𝗕𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿 🚘 Avoid the city centre and use one of nine Park & Ride sites surrounding Antwerp. If you do decide to enter the centre, check if your car is allowed to enter the Low Emission Zone (#LEZ).
