Mobility across Europe by rail — my talk at Modern Railways expo last year featured the China-Laos Railway, where I compared cross-border rail in Asia to that in Europe. Europe has far more links going across borders, but China isn't that far behind — 2035 plans foresee 20 1 national-level cross-border links (rail road together, quite a lot for rail actually)!

French Alstom trains from March will connect Bulgaria’s fifth largest city to Romania's busiest airport at speeds of up to 160 km/h. 

Trans-European Networks are necessary. They boost welfare, mobility and decarbonisation. But if we want this to become a reality for all Europeans - particularly those living in rural and border areas - we need to go the last mile. We have to work harder at local, regional, national and European level to close the smaller missing railway gaps between EU Member States and (re-)activate regional railway networks. This year’s conference provided a lot of insights from developments in Nordic countries, Holland and UK. For example: Sweden will move the bar from 25.25m to 34.5m combinations, largely enabled by vehicle developments rather than infrastructure investments. The implementation will initially be on the road network where majority of tonkm are transported, with 30% savings in fuel/CO2 per transport and 6% calculated for the entire system. #sustainbility #HCT #roadtrains

Dear European Commission: Portugal is the only country in Europe that has no rail connection to... Europe. It is a shame for our country leaders - but it is also a shame for Europe. How can we escape pollutting plane travel, insustainable car drive or cheap bus travel, if we have no possibility to arrive anywhere by rail? It is also amusing, albeit tragic, that you trace in the map a train from Lisbon to Coruña or to Madrid, when one has to endure difficult, long and exausting train connections (min 3 exchanges!) if we want to travel by rail to those two destinations. Ask train ticket boots about this and clercks will look surprised in your face: who wants to spend a whole day travelling and waiting in peripherical stations for non-reliable trains to make a mere 600 kms? Make an effort, remember we are already peripheric and this blindsighted policies are leaving Portugal and the inclusive and sustainable Europe even more behind. 🌱
