Speech-Language Pathologist. Advocating for and utilizing a strength-based approach to empower all to communicate. Follow me for posts on speech-language pathology, neurodiversity, leadership & advocacy.
Dear Speech Language Pathology Community, Let's shine a light on the incredible advocacy work that Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) do every day. We champion the needs and rights of our clients, using a strength-based approach to therapy that focuses on their abilities and potential. But here's the catch: while we tirelessly advocate for our clients, we often find ourselves in organizations that don't apply the same approach to us. 1️⃣ Strength-Based Therapy: SLPs are experts in recognizing and nurturing the strengths of our clients. We understand that progress looks different for everyone and tailor our interventions accordingly, celebrating every small victory along the way. 2️⃣ Client-Centered Care: When a client doesn't progress as expected, we don't blame the client. Instead, we evaluate our approach, collaborate with the client and their support system, and adjust our strategies as needed. It's a dynamic process rooted in empathy and respect. 3️⃣ Lack of Reciprocity: Despite our commitment to client-centered care, many SLPs find themselves working in organizations that fail to apply the same principles to them. Micromanagement, unrealistic productivity expectations, and a lack of support can undermine our ability to provide quality care and thrive professionally. 4️⃣ Detrimental Effects of Micromanagement: Micromanaging is not just annoying; it's detrimental to a workplace. It creates unnecessary busy work for already busy professionals, erodes trust and morale, and stifles creativity and innovation. In the end, everyone loses – including the clients we're here to serve. Let's advocate not only for our clients but also for ourselves. Let's create workplaces that value and empower SLPs, recognizing their expertise, fostering growth and development, and championing a culture of trust and collaboration. Together, let's build a brighter future for our profession. #Advocacy #StrengthBasedApproach #WorkplaceWellness #SpeechLanguagePathology 💬🌟👩💼👨💼

Our latest #ASHAInnovator is Gabriella Gizzo, an SLP in New York. Find out how Gabriella makes a difference in the CSD profession by getting to know the students she helps as a school-based SLP on a personal level, and why she believes other providers should do the same. What led you to become a CSD professional? “My younger brother was a late talker, so he received early intervention home care services. I got to see firsthand the impact of speech therapy. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be a speech therapist to help other children communicate. “My motto is, ‘Everyone deserves a voice.’” How do you use innovation in your work? “I am a speech language pathologist at Lavelle School for the Blind. My students have visual and cognitive impairments. Therefore, I am constantly adapting different speech resources and materials to be applicable to this population. For example, I use tactile cue cards with actual objects rather than 2-D pictures.” Tell us about a time you’ve made an impact in your profession. “Currently, I am a school-based speech language pathologist. My caseload has students with visual and cognitive impairments. Through trial and error, I learned that one of my students responds well to music. Therefore, I started singing directions or phrases and having this student fill in the blank to expand his verbal language skills. This personal impact shows how important it is for providers to get to know their students on a personal level.” ________________________ The ASHA Innovator initiative is led by ASHA’s 2023 Board of Directors President Dr. Robert M. Augustine, PhD, CCC-SLP. Answers submitted by ASHA Innovators are presented in their own words and may not necessarily represent ASHA or its views. #ASHAInnovator

Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) are responsible for so much more than speech, they address a variety of communication challenges that can significantly impact for example, seniors’ daily lives. Some things they assist with is cognitive communication, helping seniors enhance memory, organization, and problem-solving skills, which are vital for effective communication and daily functioning. Additionally, improving communication skills allows seniors to engage more meaningfully in social settings, fostering connections that are essential for emotional well-being. SLPs also play a crucial role in addressing swallowing difficulties and enhancing voice clarity, both of which are important for overall health and quality of life. They provide personalized strategies that can help seniors to navigate their specific challenges, making communication easier and more effective. #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathology https://lnkd.in/ePpvmTaj
