Looking forward to this happening sooner rather than later. A consolidated standard would be the best approach in improving ESG performance for mining companies globally.
ICMM is working alongside The Copper Mark, Mining Association of Canada, and the World Gold Council to consolidate our four existing voluntary standards into a single standard for responsible mining. This collaboration responds to feedback from investors, civil society, customers, policy makers and mining companies for a less crowded and complex standards landscape, that is more transparent, robust and encourages wider industry participation to drive impact at scale.

Excited to share this critically important journey we’ve started with The Copper Mark, Mining Association of Canada and World Gold Council, towards consolidating our individual responsible mining standards into a single global responsible mining standard, and multi-stakeholder oversight system. At ICMM, our overarching objective is to raise the standards of responsible mining, As a requirement of membership, ICMM’s Mining Principles, and their accompanying site-based Performance Expectations have instigated significant positive change across our membership and beyond. Sustaining and expanding this change to every corner of the global mining industry is imperative to cultivate a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced metals and minerals. Key to this is having a multi-stakeholder governed standard for responsible mining that drives continuous improvement at scale. I trust many will welcome this as a much-needed consolidation of what is a complex landscape of ESG standards. Yet I also appreciate that some feel that the process we are following to consolidate the Standard can be improved. In the interests of full transparency, below is a letter we were grateful to receive from a group of valued Civil Society organisations and our response. Since then, we’ve had a fruitful conversation with representatives of the group and are planning further sessions to understand and learn, and hopefully find a way forward that enjoys the broad support of all those who wish to see responsible mining practices at scale. Here is the letter from Civil Society: https://lnkd.in/eNAyzSkh And here is our response: https://lnkd.in/ez5Zx94F Stay tuned!
