The Medical staff at SSM - overwhelmingly staffed by professional women - saved my life over a 19-day hospital stay nearly 10 years ago. I am forever a fan.

SSM is a good health system. I gave good care years ago as a nurse at SSM, and some of the providers I count on are part of that system. I do have one concern, though, regarding opportunities for women: As a Catholic faith-based health system, SSM has exercised its right to deny women health care insurance coverage for birth control. When I consider that a large percentage of the women working at SSM are working at the entry level in nursing, dietary, sanitation or clerical work, I know that paying for any medication out of pocket can be a challenge. Many of these women have no car and must ride the buses here in town, even when it means standing in the cold and dark or getting up hours earlier to transfer more than once. Some are really struggling. They may sometimes have to choose between providing the basics for their families or buying that medication or device. That leaves abstinence, even for married women.
