Skills for Rhode Island's Future is committed to supporting jobseekers from all walks of life in their search for meaningful employment. We do our best work when we partner with others, whether we collaborate with other community organizations or across teams within our own!
Last Thursday, May 2nd, our Client Services, Talent Acquisition, Career Services, RI Small Business HUB, and workABILITY teams participated in a multi-employer Veteran's Job Fair at Community College of Rhode Island's Knight Campus in Warwick, hosted by The Providence VA VBA Regional Office, Veteran Readiness & Employment (VRE) Division, CCRI Student Veterans, and the Rhode Island Department of Labor & Training. The event connected veterans and others with career opportunities and resources, and our SkillsRI teams personally met with over 30 jobseekers and almost every employer in attendance!
Events like these are essential for informing and supporting those who may have barriers to employment, like Rhode Island's veteran population, and you never know where or when any given team member may lend specialized support or connect for an opportunity for work outside of their typical purview. Bill Harold, Supported Employment Coordinator for workABILITY, spotted and caught up with DATTCO, INC, a transportation company that attended the event looking to recruit new hires. DATTCO recently partnered with and successfully hired a workABILITY candidate for a role as a School Bus Monitor/Aide, so Bill took the opportunity to explore ways to collaborate further by introducing DATTCO's hiring team to members of SkillsRI's Client Services team for additional sourcing and roles.
#SkillsRI and #workABILITY thank all of our community partners, employer partners, and the sponsors of this event for their support in providing resources to the veteran community and so many others! It often takes only one person or one effort to make a difference in the lives of others, so together, we should expect the impact of our work will be far greater!
If you're an employer seeking talent, contact the workABILITY team to join our mission of providing equal opportunities for all! Learn more about partnering with us at https://lnkd.in/dF4B_qp3.

The decision of what you want to do for the rest of your life is difficult at any age, especially in high school. You really have no idea what is all out there to explore, no one does. We can’t expect the schools to know every possible career for our children. That is why this partnership between the schools, businesses, and government is so important. Businesses need people. We need to be there to inform our future generations what all is out there. To be there to support the schools by giving the students information to make a more educated decision on their future. So many people go off to college not knowing what they want to do or finish college, not using the degree they went for. This program can help with that. It helps give the students more information about the careers they are interested in and ones that may not have known were an option. It provides them the ability to job shadowing, internships, Co-op’s. These experiences are so valuable. It can either solidify what they want to do or show that path is not for them. Both are great outcomes! Whether they need a 2yr, 4yr, a Master’s degree for their career, they learn on the job, or other post-secondary education. All these take time and money, and this program can help them not waste either. Businesses need to support this program, for the future of our children and our businesses.
This week is National Careers Week! Recently, one of our Brokers, Ryan, shared his career story (so far!) on the Your Career in Housing website, which has many useful employer and career resources 🏡

The age-old question - what do I want to do with my life?
Deciding what a person wants to do for a career is one of the most important decisions they can make and has long term consequences. Valuable information is a necessity and needs to be made available.
Businesses are asking where do I find the people that will help us meet our mission? How can I get my message out there to the students, counselors, and parents?
Cradle to Career is working to help answer these questions, so if you're interested, and want to be involved here's a great way to get started.

the problem we set out to solve
when we started Journey, it was to solve a very specific problem
we knew, from personal experiences, that there are MILLIONS of people living free from the nightmare of active addiction
MILLIONS.
we also knew that there are many resources, programs and ways for people to find a solution that could work for them but none of that is as visible as the devastation of active addiction
leaving little room for hope in this seemingly hopeless conversation
in this next issue, we share about "yellow seating" - the color to signify alcohol/drug free spaces, safe zones, out in communities and at events
because today, there's a movement for "sober seating", "recovery friendly workplaces", "recovery friendly events" - because many, if not everyone is affected by addiction
the problem we set out solve is to make recovery MORE visible - the stories, the programs, the resources and yellow seating :)
it just so happens that before we knew yellow was symbolic, our swag partner, SaVida Health, chose yellow bags for our partnership materials :)
and we love them !
We have a clear, consistent and compelling message that
> Addiction is treatable.
> Recovery is possible.
> Hope, help and support is available.
and the problem we set out to solve is to make ALL of that more visible
and one way we're doing it is eyeball to eyeball out in communities - with yellow bags
grateful.
Over the past year, we've been hosting Pop Up Resource Events around the State of Maine in collaboration with Maine's OPTIONS liaisons
Thanks to SaVida Health - our bright yellow swag bags have been an important piece of those events (and they make great shopping bags)
We're quite literally meeting community members where they're at in coffee shops, at job fairs, wellness fairs, festivals, art walks, etc with life-saving information and resources
Our bags provide them with a container for information about recovery housing, programs, resources, life-saving Narcan and of course our magazine!
Thousands of conversations - eyeball to eyeball.
This is how we'll reduce addiction stigma.
Happy National Careers Week!
This National Careers Week, we pause to reflect on the profound impact of our work at The Wilf Ward Family Trust. It's not just about employment; it's about something deeper. It's about the honour and privilege we feel in supporting incredible individuals every single day. These individuals inspire us and teach us valuable lessons about resilience, compassion, and the true meaning of community.
In our journey, we've come to understand that it's not merely about fulfilling a role; it's about fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and lead fulfilling lives. Whether it's helping someone achieve a personal milestone, witnessing a moment of pure joy, or simply lending a listening ear – every interaction is meaningful, and every contribution matters.
So, if you're looking for more than just a career – if you're seeking a place where your talents, passion, and values align with a meaningful purpose – then we invite you to join us. Together, let's build something extraordinary.
