*Chetwoods Materials Monday* This week, we have been reading about Mayer Fabrics, and their new SEAQUAL INITIATIVE collections. SEAQUAL INITIATIVE is a unique collaboration with ocean clean-up programs around the world, working to transform marine litter into a useable material. This helps clean up oceans and beaches while also returning what would otherwise be seen as a waste material back into the value chain. The two collections, Caspian and Mira, are made from SEAQUAL YARN, a 100% post-consumer PET waste yarn. Apparently, the yarn is made from a combination of plastic waste collected by the ocean clean-up groups, and from land-based post-consumer PET waste. Furthermore, they are Greenguard Gold Certified, meaning that they exceed industry standards for low VOC emissions; are PFAS free; and contain zero toxic flame-retardant compounds. The SEAQUAL INITIATIVE collections can be used to upholster furniture, and come in a wide variety of colours. We are proud to show you the new Foamy 100 ml glass packaging, which we have, here, decorated with a semi-transparent gradient varnishing. The golden collar matches the hot stamping decoration, and the semi-transparent purple cover creates a link with the matte gradient varnishing of the glass bottle. 🌟 Meeting the increasing market demand for sustainable packaging, we also produced Foamy from recycled materials: Foamy 200 ml in Biobased HDPE and in PCR-PE. Biobased HDPE is a plastic obtained from renewable resources, while PCR-PE is a plastic made from packaging previously used, properly disposed of, recycled into a new product, and put back on the market. Our PCR-PE, in particular, consists of three layers: the outermost layers are HDPE, while the middle layer is PCR-PE. O-I Glass has completed the development and testing of a mobile #recycling machine. MOGRA (MOblie Glass Recycling Asset is a the mobile processing system which creates opportunities to recycle glass into furnace-ready #glass where there was previously no infrastructure. O-I said the glass processing machine is easily transported to clean and crush recycled glass to be used as recycled content. MOGRA systems are #engineered to fit on a truck trailer, enabling it to be moved and co-located at O-I facilities or other locations anywhere across the #USA. The system can be unpacked, plugged in and operational within a day, processing glass packaging for recycling from brewers, distillers, bottlers or communities into localised raw material for making glass with recycled content. MOGRA has been engineered to crush glass to a specified size, while removing any metallic content, such as caps, closures, and capsules, to improve the overall quality of the glass for recycling. The system can process up to 6,000 MT of glass packaging per year. O-I plans to increase the recycled content of its packaging to a global average of 50%. Glass is made with four basic ingredients, limestone, soda ash, silica sand and cullet (recycled glass). Increasing the volume of cullet use in glass production conserves natural resources and reduces the energy needed to produce glass #packaging. Cullet melts at a lower temperature, and every 10% of recycled glass used reduces overall emissions by 5%. Each ton of cullet used to make glass packaging, conserves 1.6 tons of natural resources. #engineering #sustainability #climateaction #industry

A sustainable approach to manufacture mélange yarn from waste jute fiber and pre-consumer cotton fabric waste using I-optimal mixture design This research sheds light on into the effective use of dyed waste jute fibers as a substitute for viscose fiber in the production of mélange yarns. It is the first time that waste jute fibers have been employed in this manner. The inclusion of recycled cotton fiber helped reduce the content of virgin cotton in mélange yarn production.
