What happens if stencils are not cleaned properly before the stencil printing process? Dirty stencils would result in an undesirable volume of solder paste deposited on the SMT pad and this is classified as a printing failure. A poorly printed printed circuit board could be disqualified during inspection, requiring additional repair and rework cost. How to keep the stencil clean? The stencil printing machine often does the cleaning work under the stencil (dry, wet or vacuum cleaning). A cleaning solvent is used with a lint-free paper to remove the solder paste. To achieve the best cleaning results when cleaning under the stencil, the flux component must dissolve within the solder paste. This facilitates the release of solder balls which are then easily picked up with cleaning paper.
