Our history series celebrating Boliden’s 100 years as a company puts the spotlight on our Rönnskär smelter in this post. Located outside the northern Swedish town of Skellefteå in Skelleftehamn, Rönnskär is one of the world's most efficient copper smelters and Boliden's largest production unit. Rönnskär is also today a world leader in the recycling of electronics thanks to the development of kaldo technology. Ironically, by the 1970s Rönnskär was called "Sweden's dirtiest industry". By the middle of that decade though, a treatment plant was constructed. Since then, the environmental work has continued to develop, and today, Boliden is the first company in the world to offer two separate copper products produced with a drastically lower carbon footprint than the global average. Unfortunately, on June 13, 2023, a fire broke out at the tank house on Rönnskär, and the tank house was destroyed. The operation was reorganized to meet the new conditions, and the long-awaited decision to invest in a new electrolysis plant came on March 18, 2024. Donned my hard-hat and my protective clothing (safety first, always!), and went back to where it all began - to catch a glimpse of the future. Fiskaa in Kristiansand, Norway, has been an industrial site since 1907. It became the site of Elkem ASA carbon's first paste plant with the invention of the Søderberg electrode in 1919. Fast forward 100 years 🏎️💨: today, the plant is the largest producer of carbon products in the western world and the key supplier to leading ferro alloy industry actors globally. But furnaces, blending and mixing facilities now share the premises with Elkem's Technology R&D and pilot centers, where cutting edge innovation takes place. Think: 🛴 3D-printed metal components for electric scooter motors from iron-silicon powder, which can radically increase efficiency and reduce material consumption 🏭 groundbreaking new concepts for silicon production, which aims to eliminate nearly all direct CO2 emissions ♻  high-temperature pilot testing of processes to recycle waste streams from aluminum production and recovery of rare earth elements from magnets Circularity and sustainability go through these projects like a red thread, which are all conducted in partnerships, frequently with EU funding. That way, we can make sure Elkem keeps delivering advanced materials for a greener future for another 100 years (at least). Heraeus Remloy launches largest #recycling plant for rare earth magnets in Europe. ♻️ Did you know that rare earth #magnets are essential for the #energytransition, #electromobility and #digitalization? 💡 Although demand is high, supply is expected to exceed demand as early as 2026. In response to this challenge, Heraeus Remloy has opened the largest recycling facility for #rare earth magnets in Bitterfeld, Germany. 📍 This facility produces nanocrystalline rare earth #magnetic powders from recycled end-of-life electronic equipment.
