I am happy to share our just-published paper titled "On the pre-treatment for recycling spent NdFeB permanent magnets: from disassembling, characterization to de-coating" in Sustainable Materials and Technology. This paper has special meaning for me because it is my first paper since I changed research fields from corrosion to recycling of NdFeB permanent magnets. In this paper, we address some of the challenges related to the disassembly of end-of-life products and the difficulties in retrieving the magnets. Furthermore, we discussed the influence of metallic coatings on the direct recycling of magnets. One of the major challenge to design a de-coating process is the variability of coatings applied onto magnets. From the samples that we analysed, the most common metallic coatings found were either Ni or Zn. Thus, we used ammonia-based solutions for the selective leaching of Ni and Zn by forming stable ammine complexes for both o, facilitating their selective dissolution over, for example, metallic iron, which is the main constituent of the NdFeB composition.
