#shoutoutwednesday Do you know a veteran that has less than a 40% disability rating and needs in home care? Or perhaps a Surviving Spouse of a Veteran?   Veterans are the most self-reliant group of people I know.  We always make do with what we have and what is right in front of us.  We are the proclaimed MacGyver’s of the country.  We are the only group of people I have found that can rely on each other at any time.  We are America’s glue!   What happens when that glue begins to age and doesn’t have the same support from the country they would have died for?  They get forgotten, don’t get the healthcare they need, the support turns into a chore.   There is a solution!  Veterans First is a company started in a garage by a veteran John ( Moz ) Mozdzien, and Eric Sepesy owner of a home care agency.  Lack of income is a serious issue for aging veterans and this is where Veterans First helps.  They work with the VA to get them in home care paid through the VA.    Right now the states they service are Pa, WV, NC, GA, TN, MI OH, WI, but they are expanding!  Take a look at the website, you can donate, partner, or even become a provider!     This program could help you in the future, so let’s get this out there.   https://lnkd.in/g33FQrVC   #winningtogether #military #veteranshelpingveterans #airforce #army #coastguard #marines #navy #spaceforce

December 7, 1941 A Date Which Will Live In Infamy Eighty-two years ago, the Japanese military dropped bombs on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.  About 2,400 Americans were killed and over 1,200 were wounded.  Of the 2,400 Americans that were killed that day, almost 50% (1,177) were on the USS Arizona. Since the end of the war, Japan has been our strongest and biggest ally in the Pacific region. Over the next four years, the United States engaged in a World War where over 400,000 American lives were lost. In the end, there was peace, but the groundwork of the Cold War was just beginning. These young soldiers – men and women – are now in their mid to late 90’s at the youngest, and over 100 in most cases.  These soldiers, as Tom Brokaw wrote, are the greatest generation.  At the Vermont Veterans’ Home we currently have three WW II vets with the average age of 97.  My 99 year-old WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) just passed as I write this article.  Two months ago at age 102, my WW II vet who was responsible for creating topographical maps for the D-Day invasion, passed. Sooner or later there will be one person left and this greatest generation will be lost to history and maybe, just maybe, there may be a memorial in their hometown that has their name on a plaque that citizens just walk by and take a small glance at.  Their names may be noted with a small tag at their local American Legion, VFW, DAV or some other veteran organization.  Their lives will be lost to history and will only survive through their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Today there are less than 120,000 WW II vets alive today, which means in about two years, they will all be gone and so will their stories.  However, their impact on the world will continue. For you younger veterans, please, please, please take the time to tell your stories.  You have the technology to do this very easily.  It will be difficult but difficult is easy for you.  I know that most of you do not want to talk about your service because you may feel that it was your job.  I have a co-worker at the Vets Home who helped create “Pope Glass” for his Humvee during his tour in Ramadi.  This American ingenuity saved lives.  He is a humble man.  Or like my brother who was in 3rd/11th ACR during the first Gulf War.  Just doing his job he tells me.  As with all the veterans I meet who have both physical and mental scars and deserve more, their response is always, “Give it to another vet who is more in need than me”.  Or Ed, a Marine who lived at the Vets Home, whose body was ravaged by MS.  He could barely move his head or his arms.  He would always say to me before I left my visit with him, “Steve, can you do one thing for me? Have a good day”.   Again, to my WW II vets, thank you and you will be remembered.
