Student at Hunter High School I am hoping to work in teaching, teaching at an elementary school - grades kindergarten to 3rd grade. I am also doing an internship at Granite Technical Institute for teaching.
What skills am I hoping to gain or improve from my internship? I am hoping to gain more knowledge about teaching and steps to get there. I am also hoping to improve how to deal with tough decisions or questions that the students ask me. I want the second grade students to trust and be comfortable around us interns and know that they can talk to us and ask questions if they need help with an assignment. I want to be able to do more teaching projects in the classroom where we are can do more one-on-ones with each student or going up in front of the class and board to get comfortable and to see what it feels like to be in front of the class. #cte #granitedistrictinterns

Despite the ongoing emphasis on work-based learning, balancing these experiences with academic and other commitments can be overwhelming for early career individuals. It's clear that internships should not be separated from education but rather an integrated part of it. The Internship Equation Report 2024 addresses this issue alongside offering actionable steps for both educators and employers to work together effectively to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Last week, I participated in The Chronicle of Higher Education's event, "The Future of Academic Internships," which delved into the increasing emphasis on internships for higher-education students. The discussion highlighted how colleges are reshaping their services to better connect academic experiences with career outcomes. As this evolution takes shape, what implications arise from colleges extending internship opportunities to all students? The challenges that must be addressed are important in my role on the Practicum team here at Gillings. The presentation shed light on the struggles faced by students who encounter barriers in securing paid internships, often having to compromise their preferred work settings. https://lnkd.in/eXzNKMXt

Now that I oversee the Internship Program here at Chegg, I've been learning a lot about the landscape. According to a new report from the Business-Higher Education Forum, of the 8.2 million learners who wanted to intern in 2023, 56% missed out completely. And the experience varies significantly based on race and whether the student is attending a two-year or four-year institution. "Hispanic students from two-year and four-year programs and Black students from two-year programs are the most likely to miss out on having an internship—primarily because they did not apply—and Asian students from four-year programs are most likely to be rejected." All of this matters because internships aren't just valuable for students, they're valuable opportunities for employers to tap into the veritable wealth of knowledge and insight that students can bring. There's a lot of things that need to change in the macro to not only open up more internship opportunities but also reduce the inequity, but I do think there is one thing those of us who operate these programs can do in the micro - reduce the barrier for students to apply. I have personally read job descriptions for internships that were as long as 8 pages or as short as two bullet points. Neither does the job at properly conveying the responsibilities and expectations for an intern, and that doesn't make anyone want to apply. Also, if you're open to students from two-year programs, then say it explicitly. And if you're not, why aren't you? Shoutout to Marshall Anthony Jr., Ph.D. for sharing this report with my team. Y'all can check out the full report here: https://lnkd.in/g4sdinGR
