WHAT DO WE MEAN BY COLLABORATIVE? Having worked through our What Really Matters brand model as the foundation for our rebrand, the word 'collaboration' kept popping up, as both a brand value and key message. It's probably a well-worn word, but it's an important word for us. What do we mean by collaborative? For us it's critical on many different levels. Primarily, we believe that great ideas come from collaboration and the open sharing of opinions and information. But to get to that point of collaboration we need a truly democratic team spirit, which is why we avoid hierarchy in our business, as we want our team members to be candid, open and honest. But that sense of collaborative spirit also extends to the way we work with our clients. We want our clients to be members of our team, as we want to be welcomed as members of theirs. We believe this is the only way to do great work, as through collaboration, we are able to get to the essence of a client's business and any brief that they might present to us. Reflecting on a recent event I produced, it initially felt like a rollercoaster of challenges, but our collaborative team turned it into a smooth ride. Unclear goals, decision-making mysteries, and management quirks can make things bumpy, but addressing them upfront transforms into enhanced efficiencies later in the timeline. Here are my top tips for your event collaboration playbook: 𝟭. 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Develop a shared vocabulary for the event's unique dynamics. 𝟮. 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻: Think of it as our event script, but with a detailed workback or critical milestone plan. 𝟯. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗜𝗣 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: Grant explicit decision-making rights at all levels to instill a sense of ownership. Collaboration isn't just invited; it's the life of when producing complex projects. Depends on who’s doing the collaborating. If you’re coming up with the foundation for a campaign, let’s start with a small group of creatives—ideally small multiples of two. Need a media plan? Get the media and account people together. And so on. Also, make sure there’s ONE person who can green light the project, or move it to the next stage. Because committees = death of creativity.
