🗞️ Astronomers discover six planets thanks to their synchronised orbits around a star similar to the Sun called HD 110067, following a predictable rhythm called 'resonance'. While multi-planet systems are common in our galaxy, those in a tight gravitational formation known as ‘resonance’ are observed far less often. The six planets are all sub-Neptune-sized with atmospheres that are likely extended, it makes them ideal candidates for studying the composition of their atmospheres using the James Webb Space Telescope. Researchers from Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC), Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC and Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC) have participated in this discovery, which uses observations from the CARMENES instrument and data from the #ESACHEOPS mission. This nebula was discovered by the French astronomer Charles Messier while searching for comets in late January 1779. M57 is found south of the bright star Vega, which forms the northwestern vertex of the Summer Triangle asterism. All the interior parts of this nebula have a blue-green tinge that is caused by the doubly ionized oxygen emission lines. Planetary Nebula HFG1 in Cassiopeia | Mayall Telescope FriendsofNASA.org | High-res image: https://lnkd.in/gCphWEpQ This image was obtained with the wide-field view of the Mosaic camera on the 4-meter Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. HFG1 is a planetary nebula in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It was produced by a binary star system (V664 Cas) that is moving rapidly through our Galaxy. The star is moving towards the upper-right of the image. As HFG1 plows through the interstellar medium, a bluish bowshock is produced; and a red trail of gas is left behind in its wake. The image was generated with observations in the Hydrogen alpha (red) and Oxygen [OIII] (blue) filters. In this image, North is down and East is to the right. Astronomers identify 164 promising targets for the habitable worlds observatory lanning large astronomical missions is a long process. In some cases, such as the now functional James Webb Space Telescope, it can literally take decades. Part of that learning process is understanding what the mission will be designed to look for. Coming up with a list of what it should look for is a process, and on larger missions, teams of scientists work together to determine what they think will be best for the mission.In that vein, a team of researchers from UC Berkeley and UC Riverside have released a paper on the arXiv preprint server describing a database of exoplanets that could be worth the time of NASA's new planned habitable planet survey, the Habitable Worlds Observatory HWO. Astronomy's decadal surveys are the starting point for many ambitious projects, and the Astro2020 Decadal Survey didn't disappoint. It called for NASA to develop a 6-meter space telescope capable of high-contrast observations in optical, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) recently used its powerful Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) to peer into the very center of our Milky Way Galaxy, revealing stunning details in a star-forming region known as Sagittarius C (Sgr C) like never before, which includes approximately 500,000 in this single image. Sgr C is located approximately 300 light-years from the exact center of the Milky Way known as Sagittarius A*, which is a supermassive black hole. For context, the Milky Way is approximately 105,000 light-years across, so Sgr C being only 300 light-years from the center of the Milky Way is extremely close. “The galactic center is a crowded, tumultuous place. There are turbulent, magnetized gas clouds that are forming stars, which then impact the surrounding gas with their outflowing winds, jets, and radiation,” said Dr. Rubén Fedriani, who is a Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Fellow at the Instituto Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain and a co-investigator of the project. “Webb has provided us with a ton of data on this extreme environment, and we are just starting to dig into it.” What new discoveries will JWST make about protostars and the center of our Milky Way in the coming years and decades? Satellites enable global communication and connectivity. They connect millions of people and have the ability to connect billions more who currently lack access in rural areas. They help us see and stop illegal fishing and deforestation. They also help to ensure transparency and security of states by monitoring and verifying actors' behavior. Space technology also has economic benefits. Record-breaking Stellar Black Hole Found Nearby in The Milky Way Galaxy | ESO FriendsofNASA.org: Astronomers have found the most massive stellar black hole in our galaxy, thanks to the wobbling motion it induces on a companion star. This wobbling was measured over several years with the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission. Additional data from other telescopes, including the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, confirmed that the mass of this black hole, dubbed Gaia BH3, is 33 times that of our Sun. The chemical composition of the companion star suggests that the black hole was formed after the collapse of a massive star with very few heavy elements, or metals, as predicted by theory.
