Today is Black Leaders Awareness Day. A day created to introduce and celebrate our black leaders with stories and quotes from upcoming and current leaders. We spoke to Chinyama Okunuga, our Chief Operating Officer who said: "The importance of diversity at all levels is not lost on the NHS. So on a day when we celebrate black leaders, it's important to be reminded that representation matters. As a black leader, I hope I bring a diverse perspective to the trust decision-making process across the organisation. I have also found that my cultural background helps me to understand some cultural nuances of the staff and more importantly of the diverse patient population, which helps with improved communication, that leads to better experience for staff and better outcomes for patients. I hope that that by highlighting contributions and achievements of black leaders, others who look up to them as their role models will be inspired and empowered to set aspirations and high career goals" Earlier this year Chin had a conversation with Bernadette Thompson OBE, Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion about her career and what it is like being a leader and board member as a black woman. You can watch the conversation in full here: https://bit.ly/3LrFCVR We would like to hear the stories of our Black leaders across Whittington Health. Leaders don’t necessarily have to hold the title within their roles, but be someone of influence who are worth following. If you have any stories to share, or know of a colleague in the trust who might, contact the communications team on [email protected] with the email subject ‘Black Leaders Awareness Day’ or share them with us in the comments.

As an anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist, Mandela's journey from prisoner to President of South Africa epitomizes the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. Mandela’s persistence in the fight against racial segregation, even at the cost of his own freedom, serves as a compelling testament to the power of unwavering conviction. This month we commemorate Black History Month, in which we reflect on the remarkable contributions of #BlackLeaders throughout history and within our communities today. From trailblazers who shattered barriers to visionaries who paved the way for change, Black history is rich with stories of resilience, courage, and triumph. It's always time to recognize the achievements and progress made by Black individuals in all fields, including business and leadership. Today, we recognize one Black activist and leader that inspires our work at Copperbox: Malcolm X. Malcolm X was a fierce advocate for justice, equality, and empowerment. His unwavering commitment to civil rights and self-determination continues to inspire. His courage in speaking truth to power and dedication to his core purpose serves as an enduring lesson in leadership. Sometimes leaders must make the hard decision, and Malcolm X embodied that. Another Black leader that inspires our work is Madam C. J. Walker, who was a trailblazing entrepreneur who became one of the first self-made female millionaires in the United States. Her business ventures enabled her philanthropy and political and social activism to empower the Black American community of her time and for generations to come. By standing up for what is right, Madam C. J. Walker utilized her success for good and for her community. At #Copperbox, we are inspired and aim to embed into our work her pioneering spirit, courage, and altruism. This month, let's not only celebrate the achievements of Black leaders but also commit ourselves to ongoing action. Let's amplify Black voices, advocate for equity and inclusion, and empower the next generation of Black leaders. #BlackHistoryMonth #Leadership #CopperboxLeadershipAdvisory #InclusiveLeadership #Empowerment #Equity #CommunityBuilding

I was honoured to add my voice to the conversation on inclusion during a Black History Month event at Cabinet Office | Le Bureau du Conseil des ministres. As a panelist, I was asked about the work to eliminate anti-Black racism in the Ontario Public Service/Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario to make it a more equitable workplace. In my view, it comes down to these things: First, take the time to recognize people with drive. Give them opportunities and resources to do the work, and believe they will get the job done. Hold them accountable for the outcomes. No hardworking person wants to wonder if they got the job based on merit or if they're filling a diversity quota. Second, hiring managers screening potential candidates for 'cultural fit' should be wary of what culture they're looking to see on their teams. They should optimize to hire for 'higher cultures' of trust and respect. And look to establish a mix of employees who can collaborate well and communicate effectively. This celebration of Black history is not limited to the 28-29 days of February. It's an ongoing recognition of African heritage to acknowledge the contributions of Black Ontarians to the culture and this organization.
