Meet 2024 Southern Education Leadership Initiative (SELI) fellow Kelli Crews. She is a second-year master’s student at the University of Georgia studying Educational Administration and Policy and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, also from the University of Georgia. Kelli is placed at VOX ATL this summer and is helping administer the annual survey regarding mental health and the after-school activities of teens. Now in its 20th year, SELI is an initiative of the Southern Education Foundation that offers intensive, eight-week, paid summer fellowships for emerging leaders interested in advancing racial equity and improving education at all levels. The 2024 cohort represents 11 institutions across the nation, including four Historically Black Colleges and Universities. During the fellowship, this year’s 14 SELI fellows work in nonprofits, state agencies, school districts, and universities on issues related to education equity. It is that time of year again when high school seniors and their parents are thinking of their post high school education. Regardless of the their educational choices, the cost is going to be enormous. High School Seniors are actively applying for scholarship help in their communities. Many community service organizations offer scholarships. And, in many cases, those that excel in their high school studies and on the ACT & SAT exams usually have the inside track to receiving those scholarships. Here is a Rotary club in Texas that takes a slightly different approach to selecting students for the scholarships they offer. First of all, to qualify, students need to belong to their club sponsored Intereact Club. Why, because Interact provides the student experience that reinforces Rotary's focus on service to others, promoting integrity, advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace as student leaders. The other unique feature of their scholaship is the post high school educational institution the students choose to attend can include 4 year programs, 2 year programs and trade schools. They want students to choose a school that will advance their chosen vocation. Check out the story below. This clubs scholarship is intended for Senior Interact club members at Fred Moore High School and Lake Dallas High School in Denton and Lake Dallas, Texas. As a Rotarian in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, my hope is that more organizations that award scholarships adopt a similar approach to selecting their scholarship recipients.

By 2031, good jobs that are accessible to those with only a high school education will represent just 5% of all jobs, while 70% of jobs will require postsecondary education. Yet fewer than half of all young people in the United States have the postsecondary education needed to succeed in our economy, and we are confronting significant inequities in educational outcomes. Join us on December 4 for an online panel discussion with community college leaders about how we might advance postsecondary leadership in building pathways that connect high school, college, and careers, a priority we've named for our pathways work. #pathways #communitycollege #careerpreparation https://lnkd.in/dUQZ5CbX

"I've had people to fall back on who have had shared experiences. Apply for the program, just go for it!" shares Jessica, one of our Youth Leadership and Scholarship program Scholars. Applications are now open for students pursuing postsecondary education in Fall 2025. Our new application timeline means that even earlier, we are able to support students just like Jessica, who often feel disconnected from those who understand what they are experiencing and the challenges they face daily, as they navigate the next steps in their education. Learn more and spread the word ➡️ https://bit.ly/3tejLuQ Who can apply? Students beginning college for the first time in 2025 (high school juniors or seniors planning to take a gap year) can apply for our scholarship starting now through June 1st, 2024. NOTE: Students beginning college in 2024 would have applied for our program in 2023 and are not eligible for the current application cycle.

It's all about serving the students. We work together with students, who help us understand how higher education needs to evolve to serve them better. We pilot their solutions and scale those that make the impact we all seek. Asking students how to improve higher education is a surprisingly radical approach to their success. #REP4 #highereducation #studentcentered #studentsuccess
