Every February, we honor the contributions and sacrifices of black people who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our history. As a black man, it is a month of reflection for me and most importantly gratitude for those to walked so that we can run , and who fought for the Freedom and rights we all have today . It is also an opportunity for everyone to learn about black Canadians who shaped our history through their accomplishments and selflessness. I have listed a few , but we should all dedicate time to research further. This isn't just Black Canadian history, this is Canadian history. Anderson Ruffin Abbott: First Canadian-born Black doctor in Canada Elijah McCoy: Canadian-American inventor and engineer Jean Augustine PC CM OOnt CBE : First Black Canadian woman to serve as a federal Minister of the Crown and Member of Parliament (picture below) William Peyton Hubbard: Canadian inventor and politician. Today we observe Juneteenth, which not only honors the resilience and contributions of African Americans but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equity and liberatory justice. By recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth, we acknowledge the profound impact of slavery and the dire need for continued work in dismantling white supremacist ideologies and creating a society that is safe, equitable, and inclusive for all.

The racist stereotypes of The Angry Black Woman and The Strong Black Woman are slowly KILLING Black women in America. That is not my opinion. That is a historical and statistical FACT that I talk about in my new book Protecting My Peace. Black women are TIRED of this! I, for one, am totally exhausted. 😞 It gives me hope to see a young Black Queen 👑 supporting another young Black Queen!! 👑 I really need friends like THIS because the road on this journey is hella lonely… Radical women require real defenders. I’m wishing for some real defenders in my life in 2024. 🤞🏽 “Heavy is the head that chose to wear the crown.” - Kendrick Lamar

Celebrating Black History: Triumphs in Resilience Today we are honoring two extraordinary individuals who triumphed over adversity, leaving an enduring legacy of resilience and change. Apartheid Resistance Hero: Desmond Tutu 🇿🇦 Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a beacon of hope during the dark days of apartheid, used his moral authority to advocate for justice and reconciliation. His tireless efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, and his impact on South Africa's transition to democracy remains immeasurable. Civil Rights Icon: Malcolm X 🇺🇸 Malcolm X, a pivotal figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, passionately advocated for Black empowerment and self-defense. His eloquence and fearless approach challenged systemic oppression, leaving an indelible mark on the fight for racial justice. Parallel Journeys: Tutu and Malcolm X, though facing different obstacles, both exemplified a steadfast dedication to addressing injustice directly. Their individual paths underscore the profound impact of resilience, demonstrating its ability to overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Let's honor the legacies of Tutu and Malcolm X, celebrating their triumphs and drawing inspiration from their unwavering spirit. Share your reflections and tributes below. #BlackHistorySpotlight #DesmondTutu #MalcolmX #TriumphsInResilience #BHM2024 #USwithSA

Juneteenth is…. ✅ A commemorative holiday honoring the anniversary of the freedom granted to enslaved African Americans. ✅ A significant date that took many years to be acknowledged on a national level. ✅ Celebrated differently by people who identify as Black. Juneteenth is Not… 🚫A replacement for Black History Month. 🚫 Commemorated the same way by every person who identifies as Black (Remember: Some enslaved people were still not free on this date). 🚫A time for people outside of the community to voice their opinions and/or judgements. 💭 Commemorate accordingly. I see so many brands and businesses struggle with how to celebrate this holiday respectfully and responsibly. 💡 Hot tip I share with all of my clients: Think about your strategies for moments of celebration proactively, not reactively! A plan is always better than a scramble. Learn more about Juneteenth and its history here: https://lnkd.in/eMZyUiV7 #Juneteenth #DEIB #BusinessStrategy #InclusiveMarketing

"Silence in the face of injustice is complicity." - Desmond Tutu In our fast-paced and interconnected world, it is crucial to recognize that silence can indeed be interpreted as giving consent, especially when there are matters or issues that demand our attention and action. Remaining silent can perpetuate harmful situations and hinder progress towards positive change. As stated in Proverbs 31:8-9, "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy." This scripture highlights the importance of speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, advocating for justice, and defending the rights of the marginalized and vulnerable. We must remember that our words and actions have the power to make a difference. As we strive for a more inclusive and equitable society, let us not stay silent but instead use our voices to address systemic issues, promote dialogue, and work towards positive change.
