One of my secondary school teachers, (let's call him Mr A) was the best in highlighting our problems as SSS 3 students that time. Mr A would go on and on about our problems, always complaining about how loud we were, rude we were and other bad stuff. But there was one thing I noticed about him, he never told us how we could change or do better. The only thing he was best at doing was shouting and highlighting our problems. Just like Mr A, one mistake content writers make is highlighting their audience's problems, but never showing or telling them the way out of it. See this: You keep telling your audience what a lack of content strategy and structure would do to their brands, but you never show or tell them the way to having a content structure or strategy. You keep telling them that they should understand their audience, but you've never shown them how to do that. After highlighting your audience's problems, show them the way out of it. It helps them build more trust in you. I know you are thinking that showing them the way out would mean they wouldn't hire you to do the job, but if they don't trust you to deliver, how would they hire you? One of our clients was having trouble backfilling technical writer positions. Every time a writer resigned, went on PTO, or straight up didn’t show up to work, those were lost hours. Which, if you know anything about technical writing, means products can’t be shipped and sales cycles grind to a halt. So these stoppages translated directly to lost revenue. I started to question if breaking into tech might be outside of my wheel house. But then I remembered I’ve already done things I thought were “too hard”, or outside of my wheel house. Things I believed I couldn’t do….. such as writing and publishing my own book. Why did I think I couldn’t do this? Maybe because 🔺 I wasn’t a writer 🔺 I wasn’t an English major 🔺 I wasn’t an editor But I was equipped! So I did it! If you’re doubting yourself STOP IT. I’m sure you’ve already done things you didn’t think you could do. Or things that were outside of your wheel house. Equip yourself with the necessary tools and proceed forward.
