"SoundHound, an early leader in the space, said that its AI can take more than 90% of orders without requiring human intervention; the typical accuracy rate for humans is between 80% to 85%. SoundHound also said that its AI can speed up drive-thru lanes by roughly 10% because it can process orders faster. Plus, AI tries to upsell customers every order, raising average check size." 📈 📰 Read more about why restaurants are investing in #VoiceAI from Amelia Lucas in CNBC: https://lnkd.in/enTsgwTN

Two points… 1. The only critique of the AI solution in this article is its inability to understand a broad range of accents and correctly place the order. 2. This is where AI integrity MUST be integrated into your AI solution! Did the AI system notify an employee of how confident it was that it correctly placed the customer’s order? Did the employee make the needed corrections in real time so the system could learn and do better the next time? At techolution, we integrate this capability into all of our AI solutions. It’s Reinforcement Learning through Expert Feedback and it’s the best way for your organization to approach AI - by teaching it how to do the job better just like you would a new employee. Our DoD customers can learn more about how we integrate this capability through the Tradewinds marketplace here: https://lnkd.in/gDnNM3e9 That’s real world AI, that’s AI done right!

White Castle joins the #QSR craze for #AI for #drivethru #operations, a note in Restaurant Business Magazine said. It will use technology from a company called SoundHound AI. White Castle has about 350 #fastfood locations; about a third will get the #technology. SoundHound's platform is all about the voice; its #LinkedIn profile said the product is used "by companies around the globe, including #Hyundai, #MercedesBenz, #Pandora, #Qualcomm, #Netflix, #Snap, #Square, #LG, #Vizio, #Kia, and #Stellantis." So this offering isn't limited to offering fries with that, though a CNN item from June noted than AI-based order-takers going in at CKE Restaurants, Inc. [Hardees and Carl's Jr.] "upsells relentlessly." Just like Carl's Jr., then. It seems instead to be the most recent — albeit a highly visible — iteration of voice-focused AI generally. CKE works with Presto; The Wendy's Company is using #Google. SoundHound, for its part, in the RB article, says orders are 90% accurate [an 'upsell' of its own, in a sense] and more than half of customers are good with asking the #tech to place their orders. https://lnkd.in/gSCybmWp?

McDonald's kills AI drive-thru ordering after snafus McDonald's is killing its experiment with AI drive-thru order handling — at least for now — after social media reports of bizarre mistakes. Why it matters: The fast-food giant was betting on AI as a way to simplify and expedite the drive-thru experience. Driving the news: The company on Monday confirmed it's ending the test. The "automated order taking" (AOT) system started in 2021 was a partnership with IBM. It was in place at more than 100 locations, Restaurant Business reported. Friction point: Customers had reported a slew of AI ordering blunders. One posted video of the system incorrectly believing she'd ordered hundreds of dollars of chicken McNuggets, the Today Show reported. In another case, a customer was given an ice cream cone topped with bacon, the New York Post reported. Yes, but: McDonald's isn't altogether abandoning the idea of AI ordering. "As we move forward, our work with IBM has given us the confidence that a voice ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of our restaurants' future," McDonald's said in a statement. "We see tremendous opportunity in advancing our restaurant technology and will continue to evaluate long-term, scalable solutions that will help us make an informed decision on a future voice ordering solution by the end of the year." IBM did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. The bottom line: The snafus call into question whether AI is ready to handle certain everyday human tasks. https://lnkd.in/df25gzA8

McDonald's is pulling the plug on its AI drive-thru test with IBM. Despite some promising results, the AI system's 85% accuracy meant human intervention was still needed for 15% of orders. This highlights the challenge of integrating advanced tech into high-speed, customer-facing environments https://buff.ly/3xjYlz6 🔍 This move highlights some real challenges organizations face when trying to implement AI and other innovative technology: 1. AI Optimization: Enhancing system accuracy to reduce human intervention. 2. Change Management: Navigating tech transitions and workforce impacts. 3. Data Analytics: Leveraging test data for better future deployments. 4. Customer Experience Design: Ensuring seamless interactions with AI systems. 5. Training and Development: Preparing teams to support and manage new technologies. #AI #Innovation #CustomerExperience #TechIntegration #DigitalTransformation

Lots of interesting things to unpack here whether you’re an investor or technologist. The big one on my radar is language and ML model accuracy. I was talking to a senior product leader about this just last week and how language - written or spoken (or signed?) - you simply cannot underestimate the importance of dialects and slang on successful AI/ML responses (and in explainablity). #ai #machinelearning
