✨July Recap✨ Here's a little look at what we've been up to the past month! It was a busy July here at Soulpepper, from closing one show to getting ready to open another one and all the amazing events our education and community engagement department put on. Here's a quick snapshot of everything we did: ❤️🔥 We closed A Streetcar Named Desire 🎭 Our Soulpepper Academy started their work with world-renowned artist d'bi.young anitafrika 💡 We put lights up in our courtyard and gave it a lil glow up! 🎭 Our City Youth Academy showcased what they've been working on, including learning about site-specific work! 🎥 We hosted our monthly community movie night 🎤 We had our community storytelling workshop presentations featuring 10 first-time storytellers 🎷 Rehearsals kicked off for The Big Easy (which opens this week!) 📸 First picture: A Streetcar Named Desire cast, photographed by Dahlia Katz

Our Makers Series is back with another incredible and thought-provoking discussion! Award-winning Tap Dancer and Performer Travis Knights will give Soulpepper audiences an exclusive screening of a short documentary about the making of Trial of Uncle Tom, his latest piece in development that explores the legacy of African-American tap dancer Bill Robinson, representations of Blackness & anti-Blackness in American entertainment and culture, and the art form of tap dancing. The short doc will be followed by a discussion with Soulpepper's Artistic Director Weyni Mengesha about Knights' artistic process making art out of his lived experience. Expanding on our love of stories, each month will feature a new staff selection responding to a theme, whether it’s a season, a moment in culture, or a show on stage.  Our upcoming screening is next Tuesday, July 23. "Something You Said Last Night" follows an unemployed trans girl in her mid-twenties, and her Italian-Canadian family on a weeklong summer vacation in a small conservative beach town. Tensions mount as the co-dependent family test each other’s limits and cross one another’s boundaries. Beautifully shot on 35mm film, "Something You Said Last Night" explores the dynamics of the family unit and the ways in which we fail to see members of our families for who they are. The debut feature film from Toronto writer and director Luis De Filippis was named to TIFF's annual year-end Canada's Top Ten list for 2022.
