On the heels of unspun™'s recently announced deal to install their Vega 3D weaving machines at Walmart locations, more big news: unspun has closed a $32 million series B led by DCVC. unspun is on a mission to localize and onshore apparel production, as well as reduce waste in clothing manufacture and ultimately decarbonize garment making. “Many brands are now forced to consider local manufacturing,” Rachel Slaybaugh, a DCVC GP, told Fast Company. “And Unspun makes their operations more efficient and cost-effective.” SOSV is very proud that unspun started out at our HAX hard tech startup program, and we have joined every investment round since. Where is the future of biomanufacturing headed? The answer may surprise you (👀 🇮🇪)... Introducing SOSV's Ireland Biomanufacturing Fund! Our newest specialized fund aims to support the “second wave” of industrial biomanufacturing — startups characterized at the outset by low capex requirements and a faster path to sustainable profitability. We're starting with Ireland, which also serves as a gateway to the European market. Why Ireland? The Emerald Isle is an enticing home for industrial biomanufacturing. Because Ireland already has a strong pharma manufacturing base, there’s a large pool of talent with skill sets that transfer well to industrial biomanufacturing. The economy’s strong dairy, livestock and agricultural sectors also provide ample sources of feedstock for biomanufacturing. The fund has already started investing — and making great use of Ireland's natural assets: 🥩California Organic Fertilizers, Inc. processes waste from beef processing facilities to make the world’s first emissions-free ammonia fertilizer for agriculture.  🥛VIA BioFuels turns waste from dairy facilities into jet fuel. 🍻The fund will also soon invest in Capra Biosciences, which transforms brewery waste into renewable organochemicals for the cosmetic industry and the engine lubricants industry. “Climate tech in the past has been measured in the hundreds of millions and so while investors have been interested in it, the high levels of expenditure have put them off.
