While all ransomware attacks have negative outcomes, those that start with an unpatched vulnerability are particularly brutal for victims, including an increased risk of backup compromise, encryption, and ransom payment. How can you improve your #VulnerabilityManagement? Regular patches are, of course, essential. Advanced endpoint security also adds an additional layer of support to stop the behaviors used in these attacks – including with zero-day vulnerabilities for which no patch has yet been released. When time is tight, it might be tempting to skip patching. But consider this: ransomware attacks exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities result in significantly worse outcomes than those using compromised credentials. Patching isn't just maintenance—it's essential defense. What do you think?

Successful Ransomware Notification Pilot The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (aka CISA) had started a ransomware notification pilot titled Ransomware Vulnerability Warning Pilot (RVWP) in January of 2023 and just published details of its mitigation efforts stating that it made 1,754 notifications last year to organizations with internet-exposed devices vulnerable to attack. Of those, 852 were “patched, implemented a compensating control, or taken offline after notification from CISA.” They also set up a website where you may find information on new ransomware, a guide how to stop ransomware which is permanently updated, and advice how to act when hit by ransomware (https://lnkd.in/gAvuTimq).

Ransomware criminals target backups for assured ransom https://lnkd.in/gxqPveMu In recent times, the importance of maintaining efficient data backups as a defense against ransomware attacks has been repeatedly emphasized by security experts and law enforcement agencies. However, what happens when even these backups fall victim to encryption or deletion? According to a report by Sophos, a prominent cybersecurity firm, a staggering 94% of organizations affected by ransomware in 2023 experienced compromise of their backup systems. This alarming trend indicates that cyber-criminals behind file-encrypting malware are now targeting the very data intended for continuity or recovery purposes, maximizing their potential gains. This raises the question: what’s the point of backups […]
