Gran Turismo Sophy began as a challenge to create an AI agent capable of beating the world's top Gran Turismo drivers, which then transformed into a mission to enhance the gaming experience worldwide through AI. Along the way, the Sony AI team, in partnership with Polyphony Digital Inc. (PDI) and Sony Interactive Entertainment, created numerous AI approaches and training and evaluation methods. Most notably, a novel deep reinforcement learning approach called Quantile Regression Soft Actor-Critic (QR-SAC) and a never-before-built infrastructure platform to accommodate this specific project. Here’s a breakdown of the AI's sensory capabilities with respect to the smallest range to the largest ; Proximity Sensors (Grey) : These allow the AI to detect nearby objects within a close range. The proximity sensor helps the AI react quickly to sudden movements or nearby threats. Hearing Sensors (Blue) : The AI is equipped with hearing sensors that detect sounds from further away. This feature enables the AI to track environmental noises and respond accordingly, adding an extra layer of challenge. Vision Sensors (Yellow) : The most advanced of the three, vision sensors let the AI spot objects from a considerable distance. The vision system is designed to simulate realistic sightlines and visibility conditions. Moreover, when the AI is on the lookout for nearby objects, it can form groups or teams with other AI entities within its proximity. This grouping is governed by a dedicated hierarchy embedded in their core behavior, allowing for coordinated strategies and more complex interactions.
