It’s National Electricity Day this Saturday! Most people credit Benjamin Franklin for discovering electricity on June 15th, 1752. It’s now celebrated annually to raise awareness about the role electricity plays in our lives and the strides made to conserve energy. At Sonoco, we’re doing our part to conserve valuable resources and reduce emissions. This year, we signed our first Virtual Purchase Power Agreement with ENGIE for a 270-megawatt wind turbine project in Texas, which will generate renewable energy credits equaling nearly half of the electricity we produce in the US, furthering our emissions reduction goals. The wind turbines themselves produce enough electricity to power thousands of homes and at least 10 of our own plants! Learn more at the link below, then tell us how you're working to use less energy by posting in the comments section. https://lnkd.in/eHQmUmAx #NationalElectricityDay #Sustainability #Decarbonization #ESGgoals #VPPA #RenewableEnergy

A major energy transition is taking place globally. The demand for power is increasing and renewable energy sources like wind and solar are being added to the grid. ☀️ As the sun doesn’t always shine, and the wind doesn’t always blow, reliable power systems need to balance these gaps to ensure that the demand for power is met without fail. 🏙️ Wärtsilä’s engine power plants can continuously balance renewables and provide power systems with flexibility that: 🔸 Responds quickly to demand surges 🔸 Can start and stop quickly without limitations 🔸 Has no minimum uptime or downtime 🔸 Is reliable and efficient, keeping costs down for the power producer and consumers Did we get your interest? Watch the full video based on a real-life comparison of how an engine power plant outperforms an aeroderivative gas turbine power plant in more ways than one! 👉 https://wartsi.ly/3uAV4cL It’s going to get technical but stick with us – you’ll be glad you did! #FlexibilityTraining #PowerGeneration #GridBalancing #RenewableEnergy

We have just heard from Aoife MacEvilly of the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), who spoke about a regulatory framework for a secure, decarbonised energy system. She states that: "The CRU is working on a National Energy Demand Strategy that aims to deliver more flexible demand and reward those customers who can switch at least part of their demand to times of high renewables and away from either peak hours or periods where we have low wind and solar generation. She also outlines 3 Key Challenges for Large User Demand Growth: 1. Carbon Budgets & Sectoral Emissions Ceilings 2. Electricity Grid Infrastructure Development 3. Pace of Electricity Demand Growth vs Supply Provision #EnergyIreland

Contrary to critics' beliefs, wind and solar power are proving to be highly reliable even in the harshest winter conditions. Recent analysis of three major North American winter storms showcases the resilience of planet-friendly energy sources. Despite challenges during Winter Storm Uri, wind power surpassed grid operator expectations, emphasizing its robustness. ENGIE leads the charge as a clean energy innovator, providing integrated, renewable, and low-carbon energy solutions. There can be no energy transition without batteries and storage! Much has been said about “grid overload” recently. Such fears of too much wind power or solar energy forget that much more has to be done to create a meaningful and effective energy infrastructure for the future. A holistic approach is crucial, encompassing not only on the generation and supply but also on the storage of renewable energies. Let´s say it like this: Being afraid of an “overloaded grid” because of too much wind or sun is similar to being afraid of inventing the wheel because it would be faster than ourselves – it just makes no sense. ➡ See the full statement of our CEO Jakob Bitner on how he sees a holistic approach as necessary for the energy transition: https://lnkd.in/gtpNKKrU #energytransition #LongDurationEnergyStorage #IronSalt #RedoxFlow

Every second counts in the energy transition. Each moment that ticks by presents an opportunity for us to make the right decisions to decarbonize energy systems globally. We already have the technologies and expertise needed to create a greener future and there is no time to waste. ⏳ We need to accelerate the addition of renewable energy sources, but this alone is not enough to deliver the change we need. To enable wind and solar to thrive, we need to build flexible energy systems that are reliable and affordable. Discover how flexibility can be added to ensure our power systems are fit for the future: https://wartsi.ly/46RDvDf #EverySecondCounts #EnergyTransition #FlexiblePowerSystems
