“Pouring from paper bottles is the future for wine drinkers,” declared The Telegraph recently. It’s a bold claim, but is it one that holds water? Or wine, for that matter. Among the businesses exploring paper packing are Carlsberg, which last year tested wood-fibre bottles at festivals, and Absolut, which has launched a bottle that is 57% paper and 43% plastic barrier lining. Confectioners are also getting in on the act. Mars bars were launched in paper-based packaging in 500 Tesco stores this year, and Nestlé UK&I is using paper for Kit Kat and Quality Street packaging with a view to developing better barrier performance. Last week, the annual UK Packaging Awards brought together 140 businesses from the packaging industry, highlighting their many achievements. The awards, sponsored by the BCMPA, emphasised the industry's commitment to sustainability. Emma Verkaik, Membership & Marketing Director of the BCMPA, emphasised the significance of sustainability earlier this year, stating, "Sustainability is no longer on the agenda – it is the agenda!" This sentiment reflects the industry's recognition of the need for targeted approaches, as there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Insights from a 2023 global consumer survey conducted by McKinsey & Company showed that while price, quality, and convenience remain top priorities for consumers, there is a growing recognition of the importance of environmental impact among some consumer groups. Of all environmental issues, concerns about ocean litter have taken precedence, surpassing other concerns across generations, regions, and neighborhoods. Additionally, consumers display a preference for compostable and plant-based packaging, indicating a desire for sustainable alternatives. And encouragingly, McKinsey found that a significant number of consumers are willing to pay a premium for sustainable packaging. In fact, in various end-use categories, 4 to 7 percent of consumers are willing to pay well above a 10 percent premium. Kayleigh Scott, representing #Granby at last week’s event said, “Granby offer contract packing and packaging solutions and we’ve seen how demand for strong green credentials in most markets is growing. The whole area of sustainability, not just at Granby but within our supply chain, is at the forefront of our thinking for clients.” As the packaging industry moves forward, it is clear that sustainable packaging is no longer a mere trend but a crucial aspect of business success. At The Packaging Conference, Charlie Schwarze, Head of Sustainability at Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. and Chair of the National Board of Directors for the Circular Action Alliance, a national compliance organization with state-level subsidiaries designed to guide EPR rulemaking, talked about how EPR will change the packaging conversation for brands moving forward. Most important will be data, good design, recycling innovation, and communication along the supply chain.   Said Schwarze, “I think the biggest thing—this is the kumbaya moment—is we need to keep the conversation open between the entire supply chain, and that's because that good design has to flow up, but the information also has to flow down. As the brand owners who are paying the fees, it's incumbent on us to very quickly communicate any of those impacts down our supply chain. Envases wins the Fair-Inno-Pack 2023 Optimising products with sustainable ideas - this is what distinguishes the packaging manufacturer Envases. And it is exactly for this that Envases has now been awarded a prize. In the Fair-Inno-Pack 2023 competition for innovative and sustainable packaging concepts organised by the Swiss dairy products manufacturer Emmi, Envases was one of the finalists with its idea for a label-free yoghurt drink bottle. By dispensing with the usual plastic band and instead imprinting the brand name directly into the bottle made of recycled PET, this packaging saves 42 percent CO2 and 70 percent fossil raw materials.
