“It’s all about the trust we have built within the team.” This year marks Crystal Kong’s 16th anniversary at DBS. Started as a Management Associate, Crystal now holds the position of District Head for Greater Bay Area and New Market Development, Treasures & Distribution, Consumer Banking Group in DBS Hong Kong. It was also during her time at DBS that she became a mother to a 5-year-old girl. Balancing the demands of both a growing family and a flourishing career is never easy, but Crystal has truly embodied the essence of harmonizing these two responsibilities. She modestly attributes her success to DBS’ supportive parental policies and networks, as well as the trust and support of her colleagues. “I got promoted during my pregnancy, and I am grateful for the encouraging culture in DBS, where my dedication and potential for growth are recognised regardless of my family status.” “What’s more, we take care of each other,” she adds, mentioning a recent example. “Early last year, I faced a dilemma of either taking care of a hospitalised family member for a month or attending business trips. I was incredibly touched when my supervisor emphasised to me the importance of family, and my colleagues willingly took on additional work tasks to support me through this difficult time.” “They asked me to trust and rely on them,” Crystal smiles, “And I will pay this forward, so my team sees me as a trustworthy supervisor and colleague as well, allowing everyone to ‘Be their Best’ – a motto we have at DBS.” Working women may often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, but at DBS we strive to create a workplace where we prioritise the well-being and connections of our people, enable them to live fulfilled. Our family-friendly policies, such as flexible work arrangements, paternity leave, maternity care, medical coverage, and dedicated nursing rooms, as well as our supporting system established through network communities, are all in place to provide a thriving environment that empowers our people’s personal lives alongside their professional aspirations. I Could Not Find Gary Howe in LinkedIn = The death of a Bank of America associate last week has ignited a firestorm on Wall Street as some bankers slam the toxic work culture they feel contributed to his death — including reported complaints over 100-hour work weeks. Leo Lukenas III, a former Green Beret who was part of the bank’s Financial Institutions Group, died of “acute coronary artery thrombus” at age 35 last Thursday, according to a Reuters report. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. Here is his LinkedIn profile summary: Investment banking associate leveraging a decade of experience as a Green Beret leading high-performing teams in volatile, complex, and ambiguous environments. -Results oriented problem solver - Analytical and objective thinker -Careful & detail oriented decision maker. His death came after he had allegedly been working some 100 hours a week for several weeks in a row on a $2 billion merger that was completed last Monday — three days before his tragic death. Some employees have reportedly messaged each other about a possible walkout in an effort to bargain for better working conditions, according to popular financial website and chat board Wall Street Oasis. The demands include “proactive policies” that cap work schedules at an average of 80 hours over a seven-day period, and that employees get at least one weekend off per month. It also called for an investigation into Lukenas’ death. Much of the outcry on social media site Reddit from purported bank staffers has been directed at Lukenas’ boss Gary Howe, co-head of the financial institutions group. Howe took down his LinkedIn page during the last few days. Oh now it is clear: Lukenas’ boss Gary Howe, co-head of the financial institutions group, took down his LinkedIn page during the last few days. I could easily find Mr Lukenas but sadly he is dead now from overwhelming overwork. = In the U.S. armed forces, the green beret may be worn only by soldiers awarded the Special Forces Tab, signifying they have been qualified as Special Forces (SF) soldiers. The Special Forces beret is officially designated "beret, man's, wool, rifle green, army shade 297". Special Forces have a longstanding and close relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency, tracing their lineage back to the Agency's predecessors in the OSS and First Special Service Force - CENTRAL OFFICE INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (CIA) hiighly secretive Special Activities. U.S. Special Forces wear the green beret as a distinction of excellence and uniqueness. Congratulations to Bank of America and other American companies to create such working conditions which even Green Beret cadre soldiers are not able to withstand. All in the name of: Work harder to make me richer slogans from people who are filthy rich already. That is how: Greenbucks kills Green Berets. Does that make you: Green with Envy on Greenbucks earning potential? Remember that death is a common benefit offered nowadays.

Much of the focus on off channel comms has been with how it relates to business records. But more often, as happened to this broker, messaging apps are where work becomes personal and where, unfortunately, the personal can then become problematic. As firms uplift their controls and monitoring of off channel comms, they should make sure not just to push for compliance as a matter of record keeping. They should remind staff of their responsibilities to fostering a respectful workplace, free of harassment. #offchannelcomms

The #Eurotech tragedy is a heartbreaking event that compels us to look beyond the headlines. While violence can never be the answer, it raises a troubling question: could this have been prevented? The answer likely lies in a shared responsibility. Employers have a role to play. The hiring process shouldn't just focus on qualifications, but also consider an applicant's well-being. Offering financial support programs or simply being open to timely assistance for employees facing hardship can make a world of difference. Employees too, have a responsibility to research potential employers. Company reviews and a clear understanding of the company's financial health are crucial steps in making informed career decisions. But the responsibility doesn't end there. As colleagues, we often fall into the trap of gossip. Instead, let's build a culture of understanding. Recognizing a colleague's struggles allows us to offer support, not judgment. A listening ear and a helping hand can be powerful tools in preventing despair. By fostering empathy and open communication in the workplace, we create an environment that's not only productive but also supportive. This, in turn, strengthens our communities and helps us all weather the challenges we face, both financial and personal.

#FINEXPhils Ronald Goseco writes for The Manila Times "Recruiting Gen Z" As a group, they have an amplified focus on social justice, which is compounded by social media. They have a collective mindset and a deep social consciousness. They prioritize health and well-being. They expect flexible and remote work because of their exposure to a job market in a period of mass mobility. Digital platforms also enabled access to job applications and professional networks. Zoomers like previous generations, also aspire to change the world and create the next big thing. As a group, they revere the entrepreneurial culture and desire for self-employment and autonomy. It’s certainly starting to feel that banks would have to go through a lot of hurdles to convince Gen Z that banking is the right career choice. It could be achieved though with the right mindset and the will to implement the changes that are crucial to ensuring the future.
