We’re inspired by exciting new data from the American Clean Power Association (ACP) regarding the impact of the recent groundbreaking federal legislation on our industry. The ACP found that the past year has resulted in private investments totaling $271 billion in domestic clean energy projects and manufacturing facilities. The amount exceeds the total clean energy investment made over the previous eight years combined! This kind of news reminds us of the incredible importance of federal and state support for renewables and galvanizes us to keep doing what we do. The California ISO's (CAISO’s) Extended Day-Ahead Market Forum today in Las Vegas is an important step to foster conversations among energy decision makers and advocates from across the West. As staff from Enel North America and EDP Renewables note in this op-ed today, “The only way to reliably keep the lights on is if states across the region can work together to strengthen the energy grid. NSTAR Electric Company, now operating as Eversource Energy, has filed new basic service rates for Western Massachusetts (WMA), effective January 1, 2024.   Here’s what you need to know: ➢   Small Commercial & Industrial Rates (Jan-Jun 2024): For small businesses, the filed fixed basic service rate for the same period is 16.258¢/kWh, which is about 5% higher than the current rate of 15.513¢/kWh. ➢   Environmental Adders: These rates include various environmental adders like the Renewable Portfolio Standard, Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard, Clean Energy Standard, and Clean Peak Standard adders. We are pleased that New York Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Public Service Commission have approved the Energy Storage Roadmap which includes a long duration energy storage (LDES) carveout for 8-hour storage. The Roadmap estimates that over 4 GW of 8-hour LDES will need to be deployed by 2035 and 6.8 GW by 2050 in New York. “With more renewable generation than any other state on the east coast, deep duration storage is only going to become more critical to keeping the lights on as New York continues to work towards its decarbonization goals. New York has recognized that 8 hour storage is needed to move the energy transition forward while maintaining the reliability of the grid, and we're confident that other states will follow" said Jordan Cole, Chief Commercial Officer at Hydrostor. After a century of incremental change, the #utility industry is undergoing a massive transition from centralized, fossil energy sources to distributed, #renewableenergy sources. Many utilities have #cleanenergy goals, often driven or supported by public utility mandates designed to accelerate this transition. So, what now? Is this transition a question of meeting #regulatory requirements for clean energy, or is there more to this? How will this transition impact asset management practices? How does a utility make decisions around large, grid-scale renewables that require building more transmission infrastructure versus deploying localized energy sources? Where is the balance between these alternatives? At some point, each utility must make critical decisions for its network area and plan accordingly.
