This planned offshore wind farm is huge - 3.1 GW. I've always wondered if there is a market for the byproduct O2 from electrolysis. This proposed use of injecting it into the bottom water of the Baltic Sea is a new one. Anoxic oceans is one of the nightmare climate scenarios which we can infer from the paleo record (https://lnkd.in/gk-BB8CN). A better (more immediate) use is probably to use it for oxy-combustion of natural gas in an Allam Cycle plant. That would make the flue gas CO2 pipeline-ready after condensing out the water vapour. "Ingka Investments, the investment arm of Ikea owner Ingka Group, and Nordic developer OX2 have submitted a permit application to build the 3.1GW Neptunus offshore wind farm in Sweden, along with adjacent hydrogen production of up to 370,000 tonnes a year. OX2 has suggested that the hydrogen could be used in industry, transport, energy storage, or further refined into e-fuels, although no provisional offtake agreements have been signed to date. The developer and retail duo has also applied for a pilot project to oxygenate the Baltic Sea. Oxygen is a by-product of hydrogen production and can be used to oxygenate the waters surrounding the project, thereby contributing to restoring marine life in an area with oxygen deficiency. “The energy hub Neptunus is one of the first of the next generation of wind farms. By producing renewable energy and hydrogen, Sweden will be able to secure energy for sectors that can’t be electrified,” said Emelie Zakrisson, head of offshore wind development in Sweden at OX2. “The oxygen from the hydrogen production can also be used to oxygenate the bottom water in the Baltic Sea and improve biodiversity.” Hydrogen project developers to date have given little focus to oxygen by-production, which could represent either an opportunity to reoxygenate so-called “dead zones” in the ocean or an additional revenue stream." https://lnkd.in/gPcwHepd

MARINE RENEWABLES: Nautical Sunrise project invests €6.8m in plans to build world’s largest offshore floating solar system Horizon Europe’s Nautical Sunrise project has invested €6.8m (US$7.4m) in floating solar company SolarDuck’s €8.4m (US$9.1m) plans to design, build and showcase the world's largest offshore floating #solar (OFS) system. The project to execute research and development on OFS systems and their components began in December 2023. It is expected to enable the large-scale deployment and commercialization of OFS systems in the future, both as standalone systems and integrated into offshore wind farms. Don Hoogendoorn, chief technology officer of SolarDuck, said, “This subsidy allows SolarDuck with its partners to push the environmental boundary of the design and at the same time get an in-depth understanding of the ecological [merit] and reliability of the design.” Simon Johannes Stark, CTO of project lead Dutch Marine Energy Centre (DMEC), added, “We have the chance to address important knowledge gaps around the design and environmental impact of offshore solar, and together with RWE and the OranjeWind consortium we can do so in full alignment and integration with a commercial offshore wind park.” The project consists of a collaboration of its partners: DMEC (Dutch Marine Energy Centre), SolarDuck, RWE, Blunova – a Carlo Maresca Group company, Bridon-Bekaert The Ropes Group, Deltares, UHasselt and KU Leuven, Oxford PV, SINTEF Industry, SINTEF Ocean, IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, INESC TEC and WavEC - Offshore Renewables. Federal government announces $70 million for Bell Bay through Regional Hydrogen Hubs program #hydrogen #greenhydrogen #renewables #decarbonisation The federal government has announced that it will spend $70 million towards development of Tasmania’s Bell Bay hydrogen hub, which will create a claimed 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen a year and about 740 jobs, and be completed “by early 2028”. According to a joint statement on Thursday morning from federal energy minister Chris Bowen and state energy minister Nick Duigan, the Tasmanian government will lead a group of partners on the project, including TasPorts, TasWater, TasIrrigation, the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone, and TasNetworks, to deliver the project.  The project is scheduled to begin this year and its total value was given as $300 million. According to the federal government, Bell Bay is part of investment totalling over $500 million in regional hydrogen hubs, including at Kwinana, Townsville, and the Hunter. https://lnkd.in/g_DM65kY

MadoquaPower2X demonstrates its continued commitment to Portugal By signing multiple land leases for industrial land in Sines. MadoquaPower2X (MP2X), a Portuguese, Danish and Dutch international consortium led by Madoqua Renewables, announces the signing of multiple 20-year land lease agreements for 60 hectares of industrial land for the Green Hydrogen and Ammonia production units in the Sines industrial zone. MP2X will continue to promote the circular value chain, lower CO2 emissions, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, namely by reducing imports of natural gas, significantly boosting compliance with the national and European objectives set out in the national (PNEC 2030) and European (REPowerEU) strategies for decarbonization and in the national strategy for Hydrogen (EN-H2). The production of these green energy carriers, an activity classified as "sustainable" according to the latest European Union taxonomy, will generate sustainable economic growth and territorial cohesion for Portugal. The consolidated strategic investment envisions the creation of 265 highly qualified permanent jobs and 6,000 indirect jobs established through local partnerships and with academia from 2025 onwards. The ambition of the project is based on an eight-year strategic plan, the first phase of the project alone already corresponds to 20% of the Portuguese targets in the context of European green hydrogen production. MP2X is essential to contribute to the European autonomy in terms of energy and food (fertiliser) value chains through the consumption and production of hydrogen and commercialisation of Green Ammonia". Phase 1 will use 560 MVA of capacity to annually produce 50,000 tons of hydrogen and 300,000 tons of green ammonia using renewable electricity. Including Phase 2 development, the project will use an electrical connection of 1400 MVA to produce a total of 150,000 tons of hydrogen and more than 1 million tons of green ammonia annually. MP2X is and will continue to be a truly European direct driver of other national investments in the hydrogen production value chain in Sines, with technical and commercial partnerships to buy hydrogen produced by third parties. MP2X provides for the construction and operation of self-consumption solar and wind farms that will produce the renewable energy dedicated to the industrial unit in Sines, to be implemented in inland, deconcentrated, and dispersed areas of the Portuguese territory. Project Verdant to be powered by hydrogen. By Dominic Ellis A project supported by the UK’s national innovation agency, Innovate UK is aiming to retrofit a CTV (Crew Transfer Vessel) with hydrogen fuel cells, to cut emissions while servicing offshore wind farms. Phase 1 of Project Verdant is now underway involving a preliminary design and feasibility study. If the concept is deemed viable subsequent project phases will seek to execute the concept design and test it in the field. The project consortium is led by Orkney-based Green Marine, which supports the offshore renewable energy sector across Europe with marine engineering services and a comprehensive fleet of workboats, crew transfer vessels, heavy lift and transportation barges. It is being supported by project partners Waves Group and EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre). Jason Schofield, Green Marine’s Managing Director, said the ultimate objective is to capture sufficient learning from the operation of a retro-fitted vessel to enable Green Marine to expand its fleet with new-build ZE CTVs (Zero Emissions Crew Transfer Vessels) and ultimately SOVs (Service Operation Vessels), to support installation and maintenance activities in offshore wind farms in the UK and further afield. https://lnkd.in/eadSvr4D

This commitment to sustainable transformation is also supported by our work in the Blue Mission Banos Project #bluemissionbanos and BlueMissionAA but also highlights a broader commitment to impactful environmental stewardship. This week, as #ICES releases its Roadmap for Offshore Renewable Energy.  Norwegian giant Statkraft is all geared up to acquire a new powerful asset - a 450 MW "water battery" project, located right next to the enigmatic Loch Ness, Scotland. This colossal venture is set to mark a significant uptick in their already prominent green tech portfolio. Reputed for supporting renewable energy sources, the "water battery" or 'Red John Pumped Storage Hydro Scheme' as it's known administratively, is quite the technical marvel. The facility works in concert with onshore wind farms and exclusively uses reversible turbines for its operation, thus stepping up the game for energy storage systems. The working principle is ingeniously simple yet effective. During times of excess power, water is pumped from a lower reservoir to an upper one, mimicking the nature of a giant water battery. When there's a power need, the turbines are reversed, and the stored water is released to generate the required power. Ingenious, isn't it?  

📣 Two Portuguese projects on Renewable Energy from Galp and MadoquaPower2X have been awarded by the European Commission under the European Hydrogen Bank.   🤝 The European Commission awarded nearly €720 million to seven #renewable #hydrogen projects in Europe, selected through the first competitive bidding process under the #EuropeanHydrogenBank. Of the total amount awarded, the MadoquaPower2X project will take 245.2 million euros, and Galp 84.2 million. 🇵🇹 Together, the two Portuguese projects total 329.4 million euros, 45.8% of the total.   The remaining 389.7 million (54.2%) will be distributed among three more green hydrogen production projects in Spain, one in Norway and another in Finland.   The 7 selected projects were the winners of an oversubscribed auction which attracted 132 bids in total. Together, the winning bidders plan to produce 1.58 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over ten years, avoiding more than 10 million tonnes of #CO2 emissions. They submitted bids between €0.37 and €0.48 per kilogram of renewable hydrogen produced, and also met the other qualification requirements. The subsidy the 7 projects will receive ranges from €8 million to €245 million.   ➡ The project headed by #Galp (Grey2Green II) has a capacity of 200 MW of electrolysers, with a price of 0.39 euros per kilogram of hydrogen. ➡ The project coordinated by #MadoquaPower2X (MP2X) has 500 megawatts of electricity and a price of 0.48 euros per kilogram. The seven selected projects will now start preparing their individual grant agreements with the CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. These agreements are expected to be signed by November 2024 at the latest. Selected projects will have to start producing renewable hydrogen within a maximum of 5 years after signing the grant agreement.
