After a little more than five and a half years, the Horizon 2020/Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) project SUSFERT - SUStainable FERTtilisers came to a conclusion in December 2023. The project successfully developed novel bio-based fertilisers that aim to integrate fertiliser components and products into existing production processes and EU agricultural practices. In selected field trials over several years, SUSFERT demonstrated the effectiveness of its novel prototype components combining biodegradable coatings, probiotics, and struvite as a replacement for phosphorus and iron supply, as well as lignosulfonate-based nutrigels, evaluated the economic potential and sustainability of the tested products, ensured compliance with legal regulations and finally evaluating the potential for market entry. A significant contribution to the SUSFERT project was made by ACIES BIO Ltd., a key player in the field of biotechnology, which upgraded its fermentation facility to enable the production of rhodotorulic acid. This compound, a vital iron chelator used in sustainable iron fertilization, represents a major advancement in the project's aim to develop environmentally friendly agricultural inputs. By producing rhodotorulic acid, Acies Bio enhanced the project's ability to offer a sustainable solution for iron supply in agriculture, showcasing how biotechnological innovations can directly contribute to the development of sustainable and effective agricultural practices within the European Union. #sustainableagriculture #fertilizers #biotechnology

The graph represents a paradigm shift in agricultural focus towards more sustainable practices. It's a visually engaging piece that underscores the contrast between current agricultural methods and a more sustainable approach, advocating for a portfolio of solutions to improve #soilhealth and agricultural productivity. On the left side, under the red warning sign reading "Current focus on agriculture," the image highlights several issues with today's farming methods, such as low crop diversity, high fertilizer rates, significant #greenhousegasemissions, soil degradation, and nutrient imbalance. The right side of the image, featuring a farmer with sustainable agri-food systems, showcases the goals of #sustainableagriculture. These include producing wholesome, responsibly produced foods, maintaining long-term productivity with minimal #environmentalimpact, and achieving a neutral #carbonfootprint. Central to the infographic is a significant soil cross-section teeming with life and activity, symbolizing fertile ground. Embedded within are icons representing strategies to shift towards sustainability: Improve soil fertility: Enhancing physical, chemical, and biological soil properties. Monitoring fertilizers safety & quality: Preventing health problems and environmental pollution. Monitoring & mapping soil fertility: Gaining better knowledge of soil nutrient stocks for effective intervention. Capacity development: Empowering farmers with better soil management for improved food production. Support recycled nutrient sources: Restoring nutrient balance, avoiding water pollution, and supporting a circular economy. Increase SOC (Soil Organic Carbon) additions: Boosting soil health, reducing mineral fertilizer and greenhouse gas emissions. Harness soil microbes: Improving nutrient use efficiency and nutrient cycles. At the bottom, the logos of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Global Soil Partnership endorse the message, signalling international collaboration in this endeavour. This infographic serves as a visual call to action, promoting a comprehensive suite of sustainable agricultural practices to counteract the environmental challenges posed by traditional farming. It's a powerful educational tool that simplifies complex concepts into accessible, action-oriented knowledge. #agriculturalproducts #sustainablefarming #environmentalimpact #globalwarming

The traditional agrochemicals, while increasing productivity, have left a considerable environmental footprint. It is time to take a step towards a greener future, where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. Green agrochemistry emerges as a viable and necessary alternative. Based on sustainability principles, it seeks to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture while maintaining or increasing productivity. How does green agrochemistry work? It is based on four fundamental pillars: 1. Save resources: Green agrochemistry seeks to minimize the use of water, energy, and chemical fertilizers. This is achieved through techniques such as precision agriculture, the use of drought-resistant crops, and the use of organic fertilizers. 2. Optimize processes: Green agrochemistry seeks to optimize agricultural processes to reduce waste and increase efficiency. This is achieved through techniques such as crop rotation, biological pest control, and integrated pest and disease management. 3. Increase productivity: Green agrochemistry is not just about reducing environmental impact, but also about increasing crop productivity. This is achieved through techniques such as biotechnology, precision agriculture, and the use of improved seed varieties. 4. Improve soil health: Green agrochemistry recognizes the importance of soil health for sustainable agriculture. It seeks to improve soil fertility, structure, and biodiversity through techniques such as minimum tillage, addition of organic matter, and the use of cover crops. Green agrochemistry is not just a trend, it is a necessity. It is the only way to ensure sustainable agriculture that can feed a growing population without compromising the planet. #greenagrochemistry #sustainability #agriculture #future #productivity #environment #SBRInternationalGmbH
