🌱 Rethinking Substrates: In the world of crop cultivation, substrates play a crucial and very effective role. However, as we navigate this era of transformation and a growing demand for food, discussions around substrates have become more prominent. Why? Well, because the pro’s may no longer outweigh the cons: 🌿 The Pros of Natural Peat: * Horticultural Backbone: Natural peat has been a horticultural mainstay for decades, providing a reliable foundation for plant growth. * Effective Support: It offers efficient water and nutrient retention properties, contributing to healthy plant development. * Traditional Reliance: Many growers have traditionally depended on peat as a go-to substrate. 🚫 The Cons of Natural Peat: * Carbon Footprint: The extraction and utilization of peat release CO2. * Limited Availability: Natural peat covers a mere 3% of the Earth's land area, restricting its long-term viability. * Non-Renewable Resource: Peat is not a renewable resource, raising sustainability concerns. So, now what? Creating high-performance growing media from environmentally friendly, renewable raw materials is no easy task! These materials are not yet widely available, and their quality is different from natural peat. 💡This is where innovation takes center stage! Klasmann-Deilmann (our esteemed contributor!) and Maan Biobased Products - Smart Biodegradable Products (our latest participant to our in residency program) have joined forces to create what they think is the ultimate recipe for a promising growth medium, composed of fibers of biodegradable and bio based material. They’ve called it Nygaia, after the Greek Goddess of the Earth 🌍 We embrace this innovation, and we're excited to follow their progress closely. You can do so too. Picture yourself in the most prestigious Sustainability event in Portugal, Negócios Sustentabilidade 20 | 30, sharing your company CSR commitments, listening to inspiring debates and meeting Nobel prize winner Joseph Stiglitz. That was me last Tuesday! 🤩 Bel was invited to join the roundtable “Restore Nature, Preserve Biodiversity” 🌱 🐝and I was so grateful to share it with such a distinguished cohort Humberto Rosa, Isabel Barros, Miguel Silveira, Rita N., hosted by Sónia Santos Dias. At Bel we know we are part of the problem, and we are committed to be part of the solution 🌎 Promoting Regenerative Agriculture, the power of the soil to capture carbon and restore biodiversity is the key to meet Paris Agreement 2050. Our commitment: 100% of our milk 🐮 and apples 🍏 from regenerative agriculture practices by 2030. For All.For Good. #Sustainability #RegenerativeAgruculture #Biodiversity #SustainableFarming #ForAllForGood

Where does the name Matorka come from 💭? Matorka was founded by a group of Icelandic women in 2010. The founders had the vision to work within Iceland’s natural ecosystem to establish the most sustainable aquaculture in the world, and this vision is embraced by our teams today. So, where does the name Matorka come from? In Icelandic, "Mat” means food and “Orka” translates to energy. The concept is not only that you get energy from the food that we produce, but also that this nutritional source of protein is produced with renewable energy. #matorka #arcticchar #sustainableseafood
