Pleased to share link to our new webpage that provides information on new Just Transition DAFM scoping project for developing a regional bioeconomy demonstrator in the Irish midlands (https://lnkd.in/eCvwuRRN) The multi actor stakeholder site constitutes the first integrated multi-trophic aquaculture recirculatory (IMTA) facility in the peatlands that is committed to supporting, testing, enabling and potentially validating innovative green technologies at scale guided by zero waste and climate neutral principles. This dual freshwater aquaculture - bioeconomy site does not use unwanted chemicals/pesticides/fertilizers and is powered by wind. The fish waste is rich in ammonia and phosphate feeds duckweed that returns clean water to the cultured fish to restart circular process where there is no discharge of effluent/waste to receiving water (as recycled and reused) and there is no need for complex end-of-pipe treatment solutions. Co-creation and development of the site will be informed by stakeholder (end-users, beneficiaries ranging from industry, communities to policy-makers) where there is an emphasis on design-thinking and demonstrating technical and economic (sound) business opportunities across value streams for stakeholders balanced with environmental protection. Oceans of possibilities for seaweed Nowadays, the possibilities for seaweed cultivation are increasingly being explored and applied. Since there is a lot of sea worldwide suitable for seaweed cultivation, its production can make a major contribution to food security on a global scale. By growing seaweed, one is able to produce large quantities of food rich in protein and other nutrients. By applying this cultivation, as is done in parts of Asia, freshwater is saved because food cultivation in the sea does not require irrigation. But sustainable food production at sea is not the only thing seaweed is good for. It also has a beneficial effect on marine biodiversity, allowing reduced fish stocks to recover. If seaweed is abundant in the sea, species such as shells and sponges can nest in it and fish can take shelter in it. The presence of seaweed also makes the cultivation of oysters possible and thus restores the marine ecosystem of the oceans. Furthermore, seaweed can produce enormous amounts of biofuels such as biogas and ethanol. The seaweed species Kelp consists of approximately 50% oil and therefore supplies approximately 19 tons of ethanol per hectare. Because Kelp produces a lot of oil, more than one percent of the world's oceans would be sufficient to meet the energy consumption of the world population. In addition, 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫 is also obtained from the 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞, which further contributes to environmental sustainability. 🌱 Unlocking the Potential of Hydrochar: A Sustainable Soil Solution Dairy manure contains valuable phosphorus that often goes to waste, burdening farmers and our environment. But what if we could recycle these nutrients efficiently? Enter Hydrochar! 💧 Produced from dairy manure, hydrochar can capture over 90% of the phosphorus content, making it a game-changer for nutrient recycling in agriculture. In a greenhouse experiment, we're testing hydrochar's impact on potting soil, using fast-growing lettuce as our green heroes 🥗. Why lettuce? It's quick to respond to soil treatments and clearly showcases the benefits. Our Research Focus: 🌿 Assessing plant growth parameters like height, biomass, root biomass, and overall health. 📊 Evaluating soil traits such as water-holding capacity, pH, and nutrient availability. Early results suggest that hydrochar brings unique qualities to the soil, influencing plant growth and soil health. 🌱💪 What's Next? 🚜 Field plot tests to explore real-world applications. 🌍 A step toward sustainable farming practices and a greener future.
