SHI Research Soil Scientist Dr. Dianna Bagnall presented her poster, “Image-Based Estimation of Aggregate Stability Using the Slakes Family of Tools,” at the ASA, CSSA, SSSA 2024 Bouyoucos Summer Conference in Puerto Rico. Aggregate stability, one of the most common indicators of soil health, is now easier to measure using SHI’s Slakes app. Dr. Bagnall’s poster describes the selection of the Slakes method, the current use of the method, and two approaches to using Slakes – the smartphone app and the SlakeItEasy R package. Slakes uses a smartphone camera to take a picture of three dry soil aggregates before and after exposing them to water for ten minutes, then automatically calculates an aggregate stability value. In regional soil health surveys across the U.S. and Canada, Slakes has revealed mean increases in aggregate stability of 10-20% due to tillage reductions and/or cover cropping. The #Slakes app helps scientists and land managers assess the impacts of management decisions on soil health. Have you used SHI’s Slakes app yet? If you have, share your results with us in the comments! #SSSAConf

With drought forecasted it is important to understand water use, quality and quality aspects for greenhouses. You may find this presentation useful.
The AGGA Greenhouse CHAT is back! Our first Chat is starting on Monday, February 12th. Dr. Mirza and Michiel Verheul, AGGA president and with High Q Greenhouses, are inviting you to join in. Start time is 7:00 pm and can last up to 9 pm. First one is very important, we will talk about water use, quality, safety and security. With the possibility of a drought in spring and summer, we will discuss how to manage water resources. It is always an interactive forum where growers share any issues and plans and prices. Here is the link again. The Chat is recorded and made available on the Youtube. --------- Join Dr. Mirza and Michiel Verheul for a virtual CHAT with Alberta greenhouse growers. The sessions should be of interest to all growers of greenhouse crops. They will also be made available on our YouTube channel if you can't make one. Save the dates below – all are happening on Mondays, February through June from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. What better way to celebrate World Soil Day than by measuring aggregate stability from your own home? Check out the new Slakes App!
We’re pleased to share some exciting news for World Soil Day, December 5th! SHI has launched Slakes, a FREE app designed to empower the public, educators, and farmers to measure aggregate stability—one of the most common indicators of soil health—using their smartphone. Soils with greater aggregate stability are more resistant to wind and water erosion and are linked to improved water capture, infiltration, and storage, contributing to enhanced water management and agricultural productivity. The Slakes app is available on Google Play and the App Store, and its development was made possible due to a partnership with the University of Sydney and the generous financial support from Wells Fargo Foundation and The Ida and Robert Gordon Family Foundation. Read the release at https://zurl.co/Ni2J and visit https://zurl.co/DLfn to learn more. #WorldSoilDay

We (Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management, AFU) are going to conduct research project on "Influencing Factors Toward High Skill Labor Migration (Brain Drain) of Nepalese Technical Graduates (Agriculture, Veterinary, Animal Science, Fisheries, Forestry, Engineering, Medical Doctor, Nursing, IT, Food Tech) Graduates to Abroad". We kindly request Nepali citizens with a technical background, whether they're in Nepal or abroad, to complete this survey questionnaire form. Your valuable inputs are crucial for us to gather a diverse and substantial sample. With your inputs, we can develop reliable econometric models that will have significant implications for policymaking. Together, we can ensure that policymakers are well-informed to make effective decisions. Whatever information you provide will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used for the study purpose. It will not take more than 5 minutes. Thanks in advance. Note to clients: YES FieldMouse Research is great at finding hard-to-reach participants including the most financially vulnerable. But did you know we are also fantastic at recruiting the more straightforward, nat-reppy, gen-poppy type sample specs? And those projects can be a REALLY nice way to break up the needle-in-a-haystack, criteria-shifting, quota-juggling ones too. Also, FARMERS. We love recruiting farmers and other rural communities for qualitative research. Anyway, just a thought 😉

1moI’ve always used the Emerson soil aggregate stability test. Is this a similar framework? Widely used in Australian soils due to the often inherent saline and/or sodic properties.
