Canada’s CAD 80m geoduck industry at stake as more marine protected areas considered Geoduck harvesters on Canada's Pacific Coast worry they will suffer significant losses if the federal government proceeds with proposals for marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC). When it comes to seafood exports from that province, only Atlantic salmon (CAD 1.3 billion) and shrimp (CAD 98.3 million) had more export value in 2023 than the geoduck (pronounced "gooey duck"). This shellfish, commercially harvested in BC since 1976, had an export value of CAD 78.6 million ($57.69 m) last year, according to Statistics Canada. To perform a constant head permeability test, you need to follow these steps: 1. Collect a soil sample and prepare it for testing. The soil sample should be representative of the soil you want to test. 2. Measure the dimensions of the soil sample, including its diameter and height. 3. Place the soil sample in a permeameter, which is a device that allows you to control the flow of water through the soil. 4. Attach a water supply to the permeameter and fill it with water. 5. Measure the height of the water in the permeameter and record it as the initial head. 6. Turn on the water supply and adjust the flow rate so that it is constant. 7. Measure the height of the water in the permeameter at regular intervals, such as every 5 minutes. 8. Record the time and the height of the water for each measurement. 9. When the water has flowed through the soil sample, measure the volume of water that has passed through the sample. 10. Calculate the permeability of the soil using Darcy's law. Note: This is a simplified version of the procedure. The actual test may involve additional steps and procedures depending on the specific equipment and soil being tested.

Posting to my Winter Service network... CLEAR ROADS SURVEY - link below Evaluation of Direct Liquid Application of Salt Brine vs Granular Salt as Measured through Various Performance and Safety Metrics Previous research on salt brine applications has shown reduced salt usage, shorter times to bare/wet, and higher pavement surface friction. Nonetheless, there are still concerns regarding operational and safety performance of roadways treated with salt brine. Commonly used performance measures in winter maintenance provide valuable information; however, some metrics are entirely subjective, rely on historical records, depend on agencies’ practices, or only capture specific information. Therefore, this survey of practice intends to gather information about the experience of agencies with salt brine applications, performance measures used, and interest to contribute data to this research effort. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You need to be quick though, as the survey closes tomorrow (10 /11/23) Project information: https://lnkd.in/e_sjtbAA https://lnkd.in/eqMVW-Wg
