The regenerative agriculture movement has changed a lot since I first learned of it in 2014. I was captivated by the potential but the movement was little known beyond small circles, and in the business and investment world I lived in, barely at all. Except for a few trailblazing investment managers like Paul McMahon. Regen ag events I attended back then were at most 100-strong. Groundswell Agriculture in the UK last week hosted some 8,000 attendees — apparently double the year before — of mostly farmers but with tech startups, VCs, politicians, princes (!), food brands, and more all rubbing shoulders. The movement — which at times has felt fractured and bogged down in debate about definition etc — felt unified, positive, and big for the first time. Business-oriented and pragmatic but also diverse and personal conversations at every turn. Hearing from the likes of Eddie Abbew and the fun of the Wildfarmed tent brought fresh and consumer-facing energy to this farming event. And seeing Prince William milling around felt significant too. A highlight for me was listening to Ben Taylor-Davies. “This has nothing to do with being noble to wildlife; it just happens that what I learned [about] farming with nature is far more profitable than fighting her at every juncture.” There’s still some way to go to get everyone at the table, but it’s on its way. In the News ➪ New Research on Regenerative Agriculture The Yale Center for Business and the Environment (CBEY) has released two new reports examining opportunities to improve and advance regenerative agriculture practices in order to combat climate change, enhance food system resilience, and promote worker and community wellbeing. The first report, Bridging the Regenerative Agriculture Financing Gap, proposes a new foundation for financing regenerative farms that takes into account the three factors that make financing regenerative agriculture difficult: outdated financial models; difficult financial returns; and cultural differences between farmers and investors. The second report, Surf to Turf: Linking Regenerative Agriculture and Restorative Aquaculture in Coastal Foodscapes, explores the history of sea-to-soil connections in food and agriculture, best practices and examples of these approaches at work today, and the opportunity they present for deep and meaningful food systems transformation on land and at sea. A call to action! New open access publication available on postharvest technologies for small-scale farmers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The paper presents several innovations in #postharvest management introduced in LMICs that have made impacts. "The world is facing a confluence of challenges impacting global food security, including climate change, increased input costs, and disruptions to supply chains due both to the pandemic and to the war in Ukraine (Rice et al., 2022). It is critical that postharvest losses and waste in agriculture are rapidly minimized at all levels (small-scale to industrial) and in all geographies to increase access to food. Major achievements have been made in postharvest management, but these advances have not been universally translated across global agricultural systems. To achieve a significant reduction, interdisciplinary expertise is critical in translating postharvest research into agricultural impact. Furthermore, experts in LMICs should play a central role in the development of technological solutions as in-country expertise can be critical in adapting and developing innovations to meet local constraints and opportunities." 𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐒𝐀 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑: 𝐒𝐢𝐞𝐦 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐩, 𝟐𝟒-𝟐𝟕 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 EuroCham Cambodia and its Agri-Business Committee are proud to support the Transitioning Towards Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture: A Contribution to Food Systems Transformation (TARASA23), an international workshop, organized by the Cambodia Conservation Agriculture and Sustainable Intensification Consortium (CASIC) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), which focuses on the contemporary and unprecedented challenges on a global scale and more specifically the Asia-Pacific region regarding the transition towards agroecology and regenerative agriculture. We are thrilled that EuroCham member Swisscontact is supporting CASIC to organize TARASA. Current agricultural and food systems face major environmental, climate and health challenges while responding to food security and nutrition challenges. Food systems are increasingly impacted by climate change. At the same time, they contribute a third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and certain agricultural practices contribute to the erosion of biodiversity, environmental pollution, land degradation and the scarcity of water resources. The precarious livelihoods and social inequities, faced by many farmers and food system workers, exacerbate the difficulties in ensuring adequate nutrition for all. Agroecology is a powerful lever for addressing these major challenges. It started as an approach to improve the performance of agriculture through the integration of ecological principles (e.g., synergies, recycling) into farming system management and significantly evolved to constitute today much more than an approach to correct unsustainable food production practices. It embodies an alliance of science with practice and a social movement, calling for a profound rethinking of food systems to provide health and livelihood to both rural and urban communities, as well as environmental benefits. The objectives TARASA23 are to: a) To share and learn from different experiences in Asia and the Pacific related to agroecology and regenerative agriculture to support farming and food systems transitioning; b) To discuss how to scale the successes and learn from the failures; a major output of the workshop will be to identify the key research and intervention areas to be addressed in each sub-system(technologies/ education/implementation/ policy/ finance) to support the transitioning towards regenerative agriculture through agroecology in Asia and Pacific; and c) To draft a roadmap for an ASEAN Agroecology coalition chapter.

Doing the same things over and over again while expecting different results is insanity. we have to learn from our previous experiences and change/shift accordingly. This regional conference next week on regenerative agriculture, agriecology is one of the beginning points for farmers to practice both profitably and restore soil health and biodiversity in the same strength. https://lnkd.in/dXf9rSDe
