During National NAIDOC Week, people all across Australia are celebrating the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The theme for this year's NAIDOC Week is "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud" which celebrates the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. It's important to recognise the resilience, strength, and contributions of Indigenous people to our society. The fire symbolises the connection to Country, each other and traditions. Honouring this flame ignites pride and unity, reaffirming our commitment to acknowledge, preserve, and share the cultural heritage that enriches our nation. For SW Accountants & Advisors, NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to reflect further on our own journey towards reconciliation and to consider ways in which we can better support and engage with Indigenous communities. Some of the areas we are committed to include increasing supplier diversity, and promoting cultural awareness and understanding for a safe workplace. This week our Perth and Sydney offices will be celebrating NAIDOC Week by hosting smoking ceremonies outside their office buildings.   As we mark NAIDOC Week, let's celebrate the richness and diversity of Indigenous cultures and the contributions of Indigenous people to our society. As Australia celebrates NAIDOC week this week, it is worth appreciating the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and also an opportunity to learn about one of the oldest continuous living cultures on Earth 🌍. 💎 New Governance Requirements for Indigenous Data: Recently, Australian Public Service agencies adopted the Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data. Co-designed with Indigenous partners, this framework ensures better access to government-held Indigenous data for First Nations Australians. It emphasizes collaboration, capability-building, and an inclusive data system. 💎 These governance requirements aim to contribute directly to ‘closing the gap’ by enhancing data accessibility, quality management and ethical use of indigenous data, and promoting inclusivity via ensured respectful collaboration and decision making for uplifting these communities. 🖤 💛 ❤️ HAPPY NAIDOC WEEK ❤️ 💛 🖤 Blak, Loud and Proud! At times it can be difficult to keep the fire burning however every time resilience, strength, unity, resistance, relationships, respect and honoring our culture always reminds me to keep the smoke, the flame and the fire going. Our ancestors always stood up for what's right and have paved the way for 60,000 years. It's so important to share stories, traditions, ways of knowing, being and doing and learn from our elders to keep the longest living culture thriving. Learning and working with our people requires deep listening, understanding, respect and strong relationships to then take action towards achieving equal rights, and sovereignty. Especially when it comes to health outcomes. For many years I have been listening to community, actively learning my culture and ways, co-creating spaces to help our people thrive in our own self-determined way. Working to decolonise constructs in corporate environments, and ensure First Nations Ways and proper ways are upheld which doesn't force us to assimilate but rather bring our own unique perspective to the spaces we work, live and play in. To work with First Nations peoples and community it requires a deep understanding and commitment beyond ticking a box, or meeting a % target. It involves understanding ways of knowing,being and doing and upholding cultural humility, responsibility and taking on the colonial load. It's about forming, building and strengthening meaningful relationships that acknowledge historical ways and support self-determination, to strive for outcomes that are equitable and inclusive. 🪶 As NAIDOC Week wraps up, it's been heartwarming to see so many big companies showing support with smoking ceremonies, dances, and cupcakes. However, real change begins at the core of business culture. Beyond the NAIDOC Week festivities, how many of these companies are truly committed to "Closing the Gap"? It's essential to ask: - How many have initiatives supporting the First Nations communities directly or entrepreneurs to build businesses to support the community? - How many provide work experience placements and career pathways for First Nations people? How many invest in truth-telling and cultural competency/engagement training? NAIDOC Week should indeed be celebrated, but it's also a prime opportunity to push harder for equity and inclusion. There's a long way to go, and it's time for businesses to walk the talk.
